“Little to recommend.”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

We were less than impressed with this establishment. We found the male night desk attendant indifferent and generally unhelpful. They still allow smoking in the dining area which is open to the lobby. Removing ashtrays of butts in order to sit for breakfast is a turn-off. Also be warned: there is a train track very nearby and that is one noisy beast early every morning and evening. I mean it blasts its horn repeatedly at every street it crosses. There was no fan in the room and with no AC or cross-breeze it was uncomfortable. No screens on the windows so we were badly bitten by mosquitoes during the night. A fan might have helped with that as well. Breakfast was adequate but certainly not appetizing. My over-all impression was that management needs to put more enthusiasm, energy and creativity into this place.

Stayed here just for one night. I had a room with a double bed. Very nice clean room. Huge bathroom!! Traffic was noisy at night on the street side. I did not have safe in the room. I believe that there are only stairs if that is a problem for you.

Room Tip: try to get away from street side

Relation between the coasts and the services is perfect.
It's very clean and beautiful.
The staff is very friendly and helpfully.
And the position is very central and near the bus station TRACOPA.
Reccomended.
Enjoy your self!

We stayed 2 nights, once in a small room with shared bathroom and another night in a large room with private bathroom. The room was huge, nicely appointed, with lots of natural light and the bed was huge and comfortable. The french owner was very nice to us and we felt it was competitively priced. Our large room however was close to a rail line and a little noisy in the mornings and too much light came in from the blinds. Overall, we will stay here again but will choose our room more carefully to be further from the rail line and have proper blinds to ensure a darkened room.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the train line and with curtains or proper blinds to get a darker room at ni...

i stayed here twice, first alone in the dorm (where i was the only person in the busiest season!!! while all the other hostels were full) and second time in a private room. There are two sides in this guest house the hostel is in the better side, while some of the private rooms are in the area which does not have refurbised toilets etc.. breakfast is quite basic. wifi works everywehere, and nice common areas + the next door costa rica backpackers offers a bar and restaurant for guest outside. the dorm in the guest house is much better than what i saw in the costa rica backpackers..

Me and my friend spent the nights there on two occasions during our stay in Costa Rica when we traveled from coast to coast. We arrived at "inconvenient" times and everything worked perfectly. Friendly staff. I can well imagine staying longer on another occasion, however, is the walk down to the city center in the longest team.

Room Tip: Pick a room facing the courtyard to avoid being woken by the morning traffic.

Keep in mind that the lower priced rooms at this place are in the old wing which needs to be refurbished bad. It looked like a 1970's room with a shared bathroom that was not very nice. On the plus side the room was huge with a large balcony but again it had old furniture and stuff. If they re-did everything it would be legit but then they would be able to charge a lot more.

Ironically the bed sheets were all clean and nice (I guess they managed to replace those). The newer part of the hotel looked legit. You can use the common area even if you are in the ghetto part and it is nice and modern. I paid $32 which was okay for a crash pad in San Jose but nothing more. Also consider that this place is far from the bus stations as it's on the other side of town but then again so are most SJ hotels it seems. So overall I would not stay again, especially since past dark you don't really want to walk around outside.
