“Awesome hostel!”
Reviewed 4 September 2010

I stayed a couple nights at Aldea Hostel in July of 2010 and it was great! The staff/owner was extremely friendly and so helpful. The hostel itself is very nice, clean, and well kept up. There is a large area to hang out in with a huge tv and the kitchen is also nice and well equipped to cook in. If you're looking to travel on a budget it's nice to find a hostel that you can cook your own food in, and you definitely can at Aldea Hostel! Also it was probably the cleanest hostel I stayed in on my trip. The bedrooms and bathrooms were well decorated and comfortable. It's also in a nice part of San Jose. I would recommend this hostel to anyone- you'll save money without giving anything up!

I had met a German traveler while backpacking through Costa Rica, and she was going back to San Jose for a day and we decided to tag along. She recommended hostel Aldea because she said the owner was nice and trustworthy. And after our stay they, she was RIGHT!! The owner, Amir, had been holding her passport behind the counter in a safety box upon her request - until she returned later that week. Even though this is not common nor recommended travelers do, when she arrived back there with us a week later, Amie (the owner) had it right there for her. That was only the beginning. Not only is the hostel safe, sleek in its artsy design, and comfortable, but it also has a large screen tv, free 24 internet, and a staff that is out of this world when it comes to kindness.

Here are a few things they did for us:

1) We told the owner we would see him at 5 in the morning when we woke up, because we needed to catch a bus. We overslept our alarms, but Amir had remembered us saying our departure time and came in and gently woke us up to remind us what time it was.
2) He made us breakfast and tea three hours before breakfast was supposed to be served, because he knew we had to leave before its scheduled serving time and he didnt want us to go on the road hungry
3) He called another hostel to set us up with lodging for the following day, and translated documents for us
4) I forgot my cell phone there, and he held on to it for two days and made sure his staff gave it to me when I returned to San Jose

.... this list goes on and on. You CAN NOT beat this for 12 dollars a night! Everything I wrote happened in one night.... ONE NIGHT! Simply put: Its comfortable, cheap, fun, and the service is second to none. Need I say more?? GO HERE!
