“Nicest hostel ever”
Reviewed 18 January 2012

Wow!! This place is nice. Seriously feel like you are staying in an upscale hotel. They have nice lounge area with huge flat screen TV. Even some of the private rooms have flat screens. They have an upstairs open air seating area and chairs and couches are all throughout the hotel to find your own spot.

They also have a bar and restaurant. I only had the breakfast but the menu looks good and prices are standard for Costa Rica I guess. I opted for the dorm room for $14 but you can pay $19 and have a decent breakfast includeid also. Clean linens and the ladies make your bed for you everyday. Friendly helpful staff.

There is an ATM across the street and a couple of other restaurants next door. The Chinese joint is ok but forget about the Italian place. Overpriced and crap food. Walking distance to other places and also the downtown shopping area.

Make use of the shuttle too. They have small lockers but this place seems to have decent security.

Room Tip: Go with the private room with flat screen TV

The rooms, from the elegant entrance, large gathering space and open veranda to the large private rooms and spacious baths were beautiful, clean and well designed. On comfort and style this is an extraordinary hostel/hotel.
The parking is very limited, and getting in the parking lot is a challenge off of the busy busy Paseo Colon. If you're walking from a bus or getting dropped off from a cab, you're better off than trying to park in one of the only 4 spots right in front of the building. Getting on the road in the morning was more trouble than getting in! On the plus side, there is a night watchman who provides a degree of security for your vehicle, and he also directed traffick when we arrived. Too bad he wasn't there in the morning to help us get out...
The breakfast is sorely lacking, we went down at 7:00 and had to ask at the front desk. The young woman was very friendly, but confused us by asking for tickets which we had never been given. She eventually provided us coffee, but when we inquired about breakfast she directed us to a room further back where there was just two kinds of sweetened cereals and a pitcher of milk. Another young woman was there using her phone when we sat down, she eventually got up and made noise in the kitchen (prepping??) but after 20 minutes of not seeing her or having other breakfast options appear, we went back to our room to pack for departure.
Lastly, yes it is noisy, but we slept just fine in comfortable beds and well appointed rooms.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the main street. Let them know the night in advance that you will want bre...

I stayed at casa colon for one night and i was just awed by the niceness of the staff especially Asayla. The place is clean and rooms are elegant. the only drawback is the room right next to the main road. It quite noisy anytime of the day.
But oveall, a budget stay with exquisite experience.

Room Tip: do not take room 103

Stayed twice on our recent trip (arriving and departing). Very clean, nice decor and great spaces to hang out with others. Our room for the first night was spacious and clean, but a lot of street noise-ear plugs were a great help. Staff was kind and helpful when asked. Our second night was a small upstairs room. This room was very quiet, but really small which makes the common areas essential. I don't think the other rooms are this small. Close walk to bus. Hot showers with good pressure. Basic free breakfast, with coffee, tea. There is a computer available for Internet if you don't have a laptop and they let us print our boarding passes for free.

This place is beautiful, I am here as I type waiting for my chicken fingers, will let you know how they are...:) This place is a 3 dollar cab from the bus stations, it is a gorgeous old colononial house, Costa Rica style turned into a hotel....OK the chicken fingers were some of the best I have ever had, I also had my eye on the homemade cheese sticks, the menu looked awesome with good prices... Everybody was really friendly and because there is a gorgeous cafe attached some locals were here enjoying a game of football which made for a really nice environment...I am staying in a back room away from the road so it is very quiet and because this place is new and low season I am in a dorm room alone for 14 dollars...the dorm room is great really homey and beautiful....I think this is my new favorite San Jose hostel.....Huge screen TV, a few actually, lots of couches everywhere, wifi, The place is incredible....:) This secret wont be kept for long....

I believe the hostel is ranked highly due to its decor.
The hostel looks like a hotel and is very nicely decorated. Staff were helpful and friendly. The hostel has it's own taxi service to take you to the airport etc, but you are overcharged for the journeys (which we later discovered)
Stayed in the double room of the hostel for two nights before heading on our travels. The road is extremely noisy with vehicles beeping and revving throughout the night, into the early morning. If there are a bunch of noisy people drinking downstairs, which there was during our stay, the noise carries through the building.
We also had 2 men, electricians supervised by the hostel cleaning lady, doing electrical work and drilling in our room while we were in it!!!
If you want to sleep, don't stay here.
The private double has no A/C but it does have a ceiling fan.
Breakfast was 2 slices of toast with cold coffee and warm juice!!
