“Great Location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2013

The hostel is within walking distance to the city, bus station, supermarket, restaurants, and parks. Hostel has a unique charm with detailed wooden banister, spiral staircase, wooden floors and modern furniture. The staff is pleasant, and Wifi is great.
The bunk beds in the dorms are clean with comfortable mattress, fluffy pillow, thick sheets, and soft warm blanket. There are ample lockers and a large fan in the room.
Suggestions to improve one's stay: better lighting in rooms without windows, more attention is needed for cleaner washrooms, staff should knock before entering, and doors need to be pushed hard to close resulting in loud noise. I don't think the staff can do anything about couples actively making out on the couch in the hallway at 1:00 am. Hope they realize there are cameras ....

Dispite no hot water working, noisy walls and a mediocre breakfast this hostl scored very well. The hostel has great rooms, well working wifi, big tv, nice staff, good atmosphere and fantastic location. I would recommend staying here.

Me and 2 friends had the private room with 2 double beds. The beds were comfortable and the size of the room was really big but there is NO storage - no wardrobe, no drawers, not even a hook on the door! So you have a tiny bedside table and a desk but some storage would be really useful. It's on an incredibly busy road, don't expect much sleep here!
Bathroom was poor, shoddily done and the shower didn't drain properly plus it smelt of drains all night.
The hostel does look much trendier than some, the design aspects are well done but it's forgotten some small but important details. Staff were OK and the breakfast was alright.

I just celebrated my wedding in San Jose, and I purchased two private rooms to house my groomsmen.

First off this is no regular hostel. I consider it to be on the top end of any hostel. The staff is reasonably nice, by allowing us to check in early and cheerfully answering our questions.

The private rooms were great. Two showers and toilets in one of the private room, which was a great amenity.

The only negative part about the stay was the power was off due to maintenance one of the mornings and it was critical for me to communicate with my guests coming into town for the wedding.

This place has a great location, as it is so close to many clubs, restaurants, and banks.

We couldn't have picked a better place for such a memorable weekend!

About a year ago, my wife and I strapped on our backpacks and ventured to San Jose, Costa Rica. We got there not knowing where to go or where to start so we wondered around the city looking for somewhere to spend the night. We have gone to hostels before but never one like Casa Colon, Located on Paseo Colon.

Other than having very low prices per night/person, it was incredibly clean and well organized!

It has a bar/coffee shop area where you can buy local beers cheaper than the local bars, and a terrace area where you can enjoy the view of the city.

We liked Casa Colon so much that instead of just staying the night, we decided to stay there every day that we were in San Jose.

Two thumbs up!

The common areas are nice but the rooms very small and the windows go out to the hallway wich was really desturbing at night. Bad fans in the rooms so it was very warm. The service was a joke but they spoke english at least. Terrible breakfast.

I am not one for usually staying in Hostels given their general noise levels and having to share rooms with strangers but sometimes in order to save cash you have to bite the bullet and do it. Some hostels I have stayed in have had dorms that were pleasant and roomy but not this place.

I had made a reservation and requested an all-female room and upon checking in I discovered quickly that I was going to be put into a mixed gender room. Well, you can imagine my reaction and no, I would not accept that. I found out later that seems to be a policy here....do not accept that if you are a woman who is used to her dignity.

When I saw the dorm room I was appalled to see a smallish room with four bunk beds crammed into it. There are rooms here even smaller than the one I was in with the same amount of beds, other rooms with six bunks and a few private rooms (overpriced for what you get).

The bathrooms were clean when I got here and I was able to enjoy a hot water shower. Two hours later however, no hot water and the bathroom was getting messy. People can be such pigs.

The afternoon/night manager - now here is a position that should just be eliminated given his propensity for surliness, for wanting to sit upstairs and entertain his friends (drinking and playing loud crap music) and not deal with the running of a place that can get quite busy. The upper outdoor decks, nice places to have drinks and such - well, I did not feel comfortable there and after telling him I was unhappy, as were many other guests, he still did nothing.

He partied til four in the morning. I hope his hangover is spectacular. It should be noted that folks do like to party here and one gentleman in particular (a rude one at that) was passing out in one of big comfy chairs, Cuba Libre precariously balanced on his lap. I tried to remove his drink to a safer spot, he woke up and said "who gives a fart about the furniture?" The manager saw this and still did nothing.

If this were my business I would fire him on the spot and kick out Mr. Cuba Libre. This place calls itself a "boutique hostel" but all the nice furniture in the world does not make it seem any better than any old hostel out there....yes, you meet cool folks like I have but you also meet your fair share of jerks.

The casa itself is elegantly decorated and furnished, the Wifi is decent enough and the kitchen churns out some damned good food at reasonable prices.

Get rid of the manager, make the rooms feel less like jail, have evening cleaning staff and then I will promote this place.

The location it should be stated though, is perfect in terms of proximity to bus terminals and other important amenities.

Room Tip: Get a hotel room and share it with someone.
