I think that readers should know what to expect when one visits San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica and if one chooses by chance to stay at the hotel Casa Colon. I wrote a review for a famous hotel website and they just prints the first sentence!
Firstly San Jose is a dump! There is no reason to visit this city if not necessary. The airport is if e and just on transit is no problem. But there is really nothing to do and nada to see.
Iris expensive and the value for money is miserable!
The hotel is pretty looking, well situated in the middle of the city, and the staff is fire day, but that's it!
The management is very stingy with 1.towels - u get one towel per person from the front desk ( after paying about. $80 a night! 2. There is no light - everything is dimmed!3. "Breakfast is included" what a joke. Firstly I must go to the kitchen to get coffee - had to bring my own Tea bags as they had none plus no milk. Has anyone Ed
Ver seen a hotel with no milk?and for this price?
They write that if u are 5 minutes late with the check out u must pay $5 for each 15 minutes or so.
Stingy management! Hope no one will come to your hotel!

Room Tip: Don't choose and don't go!

This hostel is rather expensive and
rather noisy
no kitchen and can not buy food around this hostel
not even has water to buy ( they have sweet drink which can never replace water)
It was the worst experience in Costa Rica to stay in this hostel.

In this town you can find many cheap hotels and hostels.
I have no reason to recommend this hostel to none.

Room Tip: Try not stay here but if you have to... try to take a room which is far from the street. == extremel...

Good Morning!

We regret that your stay was not pleasant, Paseo Colon is a very busy street and it is impossible that there is not noise, however we service restaurant and bar offer a variety of dishes, we apologize if in this occasion there was no service restaurant but normally there are.

Best Regards!!

Stayed here in 2012; plan to return in 2014.

There isn't much for tourists in San Jose, compared to the rest of the country. This hotel/hostel is in a convenient location for those of us passing through San Jose on the way to other adventures, or staying for a few days for affordable dental work (the two reasons I chose this hostel.)

I've stayed in the private room with private bath in the back on the second floor. It's very quiet, but has no windows to the outside for natural light.

I've also stayed in the private room with bath in the front on the first floor, with 1 bunk bed + 1 full bed + bathroom w/shower. Essentially, it's a hostel room if they book three unrelated guests in it, or a private room when someone like me pays the hostel price for all three beds -- the total price is still quite reasonable for having your own room + private bath. Unlike the second floor private room, this one has huge windows for natural light, but this also means you get street noise. The passing traffic is 3 meters from your window, and the noise can be loud, much like every hotel room I've ever had in New York City.

Pros:
* Friendly, helpful staff & bartender
* WiFi works in all the rooms if you bring your own laptop/netbook/tablet
* Has one computer in lobby where guests may sit for awhile to use internet
* Lovely interior design and woodwork in the common areas (restaurant, patio, bar, main staircase.)
* It's easy to make friends with other travelers at the bar & restaurant
* The excellent Lebanese restaurant "Lubnan" is diagonally across the street -- sometimes there's a belly dancer on weekends
* One-minute walk to supermarket
* Very close to the Tica bus terminal (bus to Panama or Nicaragua, and beyond)
* Fairly close to the Coca Cola bus terminal (bus to Manuel Antonio)
* Short walk to my dentist (Dr. Marco Muñoz Cavallini) - I walked there on crutches 3 times from Casa Colon
* Secure: they lock the front door of the building at night, and the 24-hour staff at the front desk will let guests in anytime day or night. I saw the complaint in another review about no one answering the buzzer at first, but I'm realistic -- sometimes the night staff has to leave the front desk for a few minutes to use the restroom or to assist another hostel guest. Once I had to wait all of two minutes for someone to let me in, which is a tiny inconvenience I'm willing to accept in exchange for knowing that non-guests can't wander in late at night.

Cons:
* Street noise in the first floor rooms. Use earplugs if it's a problem.
* Only one computer in lobby for guest use. Sometimes you just want to quickly look up a bus schedule or something, and you might have to wait for someone else to finish. Not a problem if you bring your own laptop or tablet.

I came in to the town twice and both times it was treated good. The rooms was nice and clean. I would recommend them, you can have breakfast or ask for just room. The main street not far it is closed to cars and has some good food in the markets.

We arrived after 8 hours on a tica bus, tired and in need of food. The reception were unhelpful-handing us our room key but no staff member seemed to know where our room was?! Eventually found behind the kitchen, stepping over building equipment and a dead cockroach. The wifi was broken (no apology from hotel) and then as we tried to get an early night, several tramps set up camp directly outside our window. We were ground floor and the traffic noise was bad enough but the tramps made me feel unsafe. So I headed to reception and asked if another room was available. He showed me another room, but after discovering we had already got into the bed, back tracked and said we could not have the new room as it was reserved?! Very sleepless night and every staff member were unfriendly and rude (especially the cleaners) NOT worth the money. Do not stay here.

Although the building is quite beautiful and the staff friendly we can't recommend this hostel. It was very noisy (traffic) and bathroom and room had a rotten smell.

Breakfast was a little snack, not bad, but not sufficient.

The only plus is the short distance to the bus terminals which connect you to all destinations in CR.

We apologize for the bad smell in the room,if we would have informed, immediately we would have tried to solve the problem or we would have moved to another room.
Regarding your comment to street noise to be located in sanjose city, the traffic, the number of people it is a bit noisy, but it's part of the whole hotel in every city.
Hope you visit us on your next trip to serve as you deserve. Thank you very much for your comment!!!!!
