“Dinner”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2013 via mobile

If you go here for dinner I would definitely NOT advise to go, food was not fresh service slow and last but not least fish overcooked! There are other nicer restaurants far more better.

The place if self is nice, however we could not sit outside for some reason and had to sit under the "stadium lights"

We are sorry to have given you the impression our food is not fresh, we can assure you that all ingredients are chosen by our chef from local producers under strict quality standards assuring the freshest quality. The overcooked fish issue has been adressed to our chef and he is willing to prepare for you a nice complimentary meal at your next visit to our property.

The Gran Hotel used to be The hotel in San Jose. It has a lot of history, going back to the 1930's. They have tried to keep it in good repair, but it is not easy. So, be prepared for a dated hotel, but then, it goes with most of the downtown experience. The location, however, is wonderful for exploring the capitol on foot. The Jade Museum (highly recommended) is just the other side of the Parque Morazon, near the Yellow House (the CR White House). The wonderful Gold Museum is just under the Plaza de Cultura, directly outside the hotel. The National Theatre is in front (try to get a ticket for something at the box office), the pedestrian shopping street is behind. What more could you want? The price is moderate, the coffee shop by the lobby is great, but I would make two suggestions to improve the experience of staying there. One, the included breakfast was dull and has cheap ingredients. Better eggs, rolls, fruit, and juice would help. Two, if they exchange the blue florescent bulbs for warm colored bulbs in the lobby, the first and last impression of the hotel would improve 20%.

Room Tip: No problem with noise, as San Jose is an early town. If you ask for a room overlooking the Nationa...

We stayed here twice - on our first night in CR and our last night. We chose this hotel because it was part of the Choice network and looked like a beautiful, downtown hotel. I would not choose to stay here again.

The hotel has a beautiful lobby as you enter and truly looks like an old, colonial hotel. The rooms are located on the 2-4th floors and are in need of being updated. The rooms lack air conditioning and have very poor airflow. There were windows in our room but they looked out on an inner courtyard filled with loud machinery and without screens. The bed was very firm and only included two pillows.

The hotel does offer a great breakfast buffet on the 5th floor. It is also located across from the National Theater and the Gold Museum. One side do the hotel opens onto a pedestrian street filled with American fast food restaurants.

Upon checkout on our last day, we asked where we could get a cab to the airport. The desk attendant called a friend who pulled right up. He spoke good English but then tried to charge us $40 for a morning cab ride to the airport. We eventually paid $24.

If you are looking for a downtown hotel, choose the Balmoral instead.

Thank you for your valuable comments. We would like to have you back on your next visit to Costa Rica, please ask for our Superior Rooms which all have beautiful city views or views of the National Theater instead of our Economy Rooms which look in the inner courtyard. We addressed the "Taxi issue" too and the taxi arriving to our hotels have now the obligation to put on the oficial taxi meter and at the end pay the amount showing on the meter.

It is an old hotel but the atmosphere is great! The staff is very friendly and the continental breakfast is on the top floor with a great view of the city. In the evening there is live piano music and fun Caribbean drinks in the bar. Super relaxing and close to downtown shops so you can get everything you need for your trip in Costa Rica. There's no air conditioning but if I wanted that I would've stayed at an American hotel. I probably wouldn't want to stay a super long time because of the location but it was perfect for a fun transition after the airport.

Yes it is a little old but so perfect to us!
Please do not change your beautiful windows that are not closing perfectly, please do not change your old bath tubs. This hotel is full of history and that is so nice.
Location is perfect in the middle of everything. Beds were also very good. Street noises are like they should be in the centre of a big city.
We had a great time in this hotel and restaurant.

When traveling to other countries, we have to remember that US standards are very different. In my travels, I stayed at five different hotels in various parts of Costa Rica, so my reviews is more of a comparison of those hotels. Gran Hotel Costa Rica was the most modern hotel and the best location for being able to walk to see San Jose. I stayed at this hotel twice - my first and last nights. During my first stay, My shower was literally a trickle. The room was small (which is not a factor for me) and the bed was a brick. There was no air conditioning, but the ceiling fan was enough to keep me comfortable. There is wi-fi throughout the hotel, but it would not work during my second stay. The food was good. I had a much better room and shower on my second night, but the bed was still extremely firm. For being in San Jose, I would have expected more from this hotel.

Room Tip: Take a shower during off peak times to ensure water pressure and hot water.

I recently stayed here with a tour group I was traveling with. The hotel is in a great location right across from the theatre. It is in center city San Jose. On the 5th floor there is a nice recreation room with two pool tables. There is also a gym, buffett, and spa. In the first leval there is reception desk, a nice sitting area, and a restraint. The food was good and was filling. The rooms are comfortable. The bathrooms are very small but they have everting you need. The shower is small and a little uncomfortable. But in the end I would go back to this Hotel if I were staying in San Jose.

It granted a series of fiscal benefits to the contractor, in exchange for the construction of the hotel. There was also a provision according to which the Government was granted for twenty years the right to have at their disposal for free two apartments at the hotel for lodging foreign diplomatic representatives of extraordinary nature. Grand Hotel Costa Rica is today operated by the Elite Hotels and Resorts Costa Rica hotel chain. It is the only hotel in Costa Rica that was declared a historical and architectural monument by the government of Costa Rica.
