“Hotel Santo Thomas in San Jose, Costa Rica”
Reviewed 9 July 2012

This hotel was very clean and very nice. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. We stayed at this hotel the first night and last night of our vacation in Costa Rica. It was very close to the public bus station that we used to tour Costa Rica. Actually, you could walk to the bus station but the cab fare was only about two dollars.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who was visiting San Jose. The price was reasonable and the rooms were clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. They also had a morning breadfast that was very delicious and the fresh fruit was very, very good.

Room Tip: This hotel has larger rooms upstairs in their new addition. You might want to reserve a room up the...

The location is ok. We were told not to walk around after dark but I imagine a lot of San Jose is like that. It is location a few minutes from the bus station for heading to La Fortuna the follwing day. The hotel itself is nice, the rooms are large with high ceilings although there is no way to close the windows and they have no bug screens. In saying that, we didn't get any mosquito bites during the night. The beds were comfy and the sheets were fresh and clean although the top blankets were a little tired. The staff were pretty friendly and the American owner we met briefly as we were leaving, seemed only too happy to give us good advice of where to go next. We stayed in the hotel all night and ate good food and drank cheap beer. We had a late swim and soak in the hot tub chatting with some other guests. Would stay there again if we were passing through San Jose.

Hi Sarahrowe83, This is from Thomas the owner and I do appreciate your positive comments about the hotel and staff. Wonderful to hear you enjoyed the good, cheap beer and food we have in the hotel as well as the nice hot Jacuzzi. You must have liked our Happy Hour from 4 to 6 PM with Carlos our bartender, he’s been with me for over 8 years and makes great drinks! We do offer 6 different room types to fit most budgets and they all include free Wi-Fi and a hot cooked breakfast in the morning. All of my staff is trained to help clients with tour, travel and car rental services 24/7 , one only needs to ask. It is our pleasure to assist and serve you and your friends and thank you again for you positive comments. Warmest Regards Thomas

My sister and I wanted to stay in downtown San Jose to have access to museums, etc. The Santo Tomas is well-located, near the Jade Museum and walking distance to restaurants, concerts, etc. It seems many people avoid the city and I think they are missing out on a lot. The Santo Tomas is an historical building. The rooms are large and everything was spotless. There is free breakfast and a small pool. The staff is extremely pleasant and helpful. I would stay there again. The key to enjoying San Jose is the same as any other big city in the world. Keep your belongings under wraps and go out in the world! We went to the central market for items to bring home and the prices were better than in outlying, more touristy areas. We went to lunch at a couple of very good local restaurants and we stayed S. J. over a week, using it as a base for trips into the countryside and to the volcanoes. The only 2 things I would improve are the free breakfast which needs variety & I would remove the fitness room because it has old equipment.

Room Tip: I'm not sure if there are rooms with a bad location. I think the reception area is the only thin...

Hi AY Buena Park, California, This is from Thomas the owner and I just wish to say to you - Wow, what a short, concise and accurate description of how to enjoy San Jose and of the hotel. You are correct there are many things to see and do all one has to do is have the correct attitude and staff that cares enough to assist one with all of the insider tips and suggestions. That is what we do and have been doing it for the past 22 years. All of my staff is bilingual at least and on call 24/7 to assist with all types of information to help make your stay in Costa Rica great. Thank you so much for your review and hope you will return and send us your friends! Warmest Regards Thomas

My husband and I got to Costa Rica with absolutely no plan, just our spirit for adventure, our love of new cultures, and a pretty tight budget. We walked out of the airport past the mass of crazy taxi drivers down to the bus station and payed less than $2 for our ride into San Jose. We were told not to even stay in San Jose, but we wanted to get a sense for things and see where we wanted to go. We actually just stumbled upon Hotel Santo Tomas and it was the best thing that happened to us the entire trip. They were very professional from the start. Showed us a couple of rooms to choose from, told us about some good cities to visit, and gave us brochures to start getting some ideas. We sat down with their friendly bartender for happy hour and over a few beers decided where and what we wanted to do on our vacation. We went to talk to the front staff and within an hour, he had arranged for a rental car to be dropped off at our hotel the next morning, we had road maps already highlighted, and great advice on where to visit. We were close enough to walk down and wander around the city enjoying the local hustle and bustle, walked through some beautiful parks, had a great dinner, and stocked up on snacks for the road trip. We stayed out pretty late and walked back feeling safe and seeing lots of locals with their families the whole time. The hotel room was very comfortable, we had lots of space, an incredibly comfortable bed, flat screen TV, and a nice big hot shower. The next morning after a great breakfast, we packed up, and were ready to go when the hotel owner, Thomas, ( a extremely knowledgable local) not only gave us more advice about where we were headed, but actually drove us out of the crazy San Jose traffic in our rental car and we dropped him off at the edge of the city and he walked back to the hotel just to ensure we got to the right highway. That was above and beyond any customer service we have ever received in all of our travels around the world! This place is not only a great deal, but the staff really cares about making your Costa Rican experience a great one. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone who has to stay in San Jose for any length of time.

Room Tip: We had a room upstairs on the roadside. We found it to be very comfortable. A small amount of road n...

Hi Andrew, really glad to hear that the rest of your travels went well and you arrived back home safe and sound. It was genuinely my pleasure to assist the both of you driving out of San Jose and having you start your Costa Rica adventure on a positive note. I really appreciate the comments about Carlos my bartender helping you with your planning; he has been with us for over 8 years and is a wonderful bartender and an important part of our organization. Sounds like you enjoyed Happy Hour with him from 4 to 6 PM. All of your positive comments about the infrastructure of the hotel just reinforces that my cleaning and maintenance staff is doing a wonderful job. Thank you so much for that. Hope to have you stay again! Thomas

My daughter and I stayed here one night - as we couldn't avoid a quick stay in San Jose after flying into Costa Rica. It was like an oasis in the middle of the city. The hot tub, slide and pool are fantastic. We spent most of our time there.

We got in a bit late and I didn't want to stroll around the city after dark. But there was no need! There's a cute restaurant on-site. The room was very clean, tv worked. The staff was courteous and helpful. There wasn't any a/c, but it was fine with just the ceiling fan. I highly recommend this hotel and I would definitely stay here again.

Hi Adogg1219, This is from Thomas, the owner/ operator of the hotel. I am glad to hear you really enjoyed the facilities of the hotel. The jacuzzi and pool by the restaurant are a great place to have a drink at happy hour from 4 to 6 pm and then a pleasant dinner. I have really tried to create that type of feel in the courtyard area that you commented about. Thanks so much for your positive comments and looking forward to having you visit again

Great location, we could walk to get fast food 24/7 around the corner. Only blocks away from pedestrian walkway Avenida Central which can lead you to everything; souvenirs, museums, Mercado Central and especially Pops!

Great staff, they are very happy to help from luggage storage, room changes, taxi services and even trying to get our exit taxes paid! (Note; go to Banco Costa Rica the day before you leave, less lines and you can fill out the form before you get to the airport, saving you lots of time)

Glad that we could change rooms. First room was SUPER small with no windows and a scary closet. Second room with a $18.00 upgrade had a larger room, balcony and delightful!

Pool was fun, relaxing and even tried the slide! (felt like a kid). Breakfast was filling with gallo pinto, eggs, fruit, toast, juices, cereals and coffee. Drinks are always available from staff at reception area.

Normally, we stay at b&bs but if I couldn't stay at my favorite place in San Jose, would definitely come back to Santo Tomas

Room Tip: The standard rooms can be small, think "closet". Consider an upgrade and ask about one of...

Hi Bjlemont, This is from Thomas the owner of the hotel , glad to hear you enjoyed the fast food restaurants close by. Our on site restaurant El Oasis also servers very good healthy international/ French food with nice portions at a reasonable price as well, with happy hour from 4 to 6 pm. Hopefully you will give the restaurant a try on your next visit . Most likely you booked the economy room, our most economical room at app. $50.00 US for two people including a free hot cooked breakfast and Wi-Fi, most consider this a great value. You are correct for just a few dollars more you may upgrade to one of our much larger rooms and many clients do. We also have a great Italian coffee machine in the lobby that grinds the beans right then with about 10 different hot coffee drinks available 24/7. All in all again thank you for the wonderful review . Please return and recommend us to your friends. Warmest Regards Thomas

Downtown San Jose is not the most fascinating place on earth, but this Hotel is a nice little oasis with high ceilings, spacious rooms, a small pool, a patio and 2nd floor porch, and very friendly staff.
