So San Jose is not really why you go to Costa Rica, the neighborhood is a bit grotty and then you enter this amazing place. If you like old, renovated buildings - its heaven. I could spend hours just looking at the doors, the floors and the ceilings. The owner, Thomas is an amazing guy who has renovated this place over 24 years, he is also super friendly as are his team. Plenty of nice common areas. Nice hot tub and pool. We put our cases in the lock room and they had no problem with us using the facilities until later. Very centrally located. I would give it a 4 for the rooms but the amazing team, owner and building put it to 5

Hola Sounder999, Great to have your and your family stay with us. Thank You ! We are more than happy to have clients leaving later in the day, stay after check out and enjoy. Wonderful that your kids enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi. This old house is a pretty neat place and I urge guests to really go around and poke into all of the nooks and crannies. San Jose is a typical Latin city with all different types of sights. There are many parks close by that have trees more than 100 years old along with only 4 blocks to the Cultural Plaza, Gold Museum and National Theater , just to name a few. Lots to see and do. Warmest Regards Thomas

Traveled to Costa Rica for the first time. I was also traveling alone to a foreign country. Chose Hoel Santo Tomas because of tripadvisor reviews. At first I was a little concerned because of gates that had to be opened, etc. Maurice put me at ease when I checked in. Stayed two nights before meeting family. The owner Tomas visited guest each morning during breakfast and was friendly and helpful to all who wished it. I received great help with directions on how to explore San José on my own and the staf seemed genuinely interested to hear of my adventures. Maurice helped me identify the buildings I took pictures of on my walking tour. A great place to stay if you don't need the big box hotels.

Hi Claudia, Yep we have many single travelers stay with us. When traveling solo it's great to have a place that is really friendly. Sometimes , just a warm hello and smile when you come and go makes a big difference. Thank You so much for your comments on Mauricio,e has been with us for over 10 years and is a great asset to the business. He is very good at helping clients get that day tour arranged the next morning , even up till 10 pm. I will be sure he sees your comments. As you stated I am there early in the am to chat and assist , I enjoy what I do. Outstanding review Claudia . Thank You so much , Thomas

We used the hotel for our first and last night in Costa Rica. As others have said, the hotel is centrally located, in walking distance, to all the historical places, museums, and shopping areas you would want to see in the city. The rooms and public areas are all very clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. We had a room on the second floor and it was quiet and roomy. If you are driving, there is a fee for parking. We would definitely stay again.

Hola Dundalk, Wonderful review, Thank You ! We have many clients that use us for their first and last night travels, most allow us to assist them with their rental car. Usually it's delivered here the next morning and after a leisure breakfast off they go. Great way to start the trip, taxi in, don't stress and the rental car company comes and picks it up here as well or they drop it off at the airport. Everything being very clean as you stated is really important , again thank you for the wonderful review . Safe Travels Thomas

I love this hotel, the rates are extremely reasonable, the staff are delightful and helpful, and the owner, Thomas, if he is in, loves to come and chat with his guests! It is very conveniently located near to most of the museums and other attractions. The food is always great and there is a delightful free breakfast out on the patio near the lovely pool and garden area. I strongly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in San Jose for a night or many nights!

Hi Buffie, Well what can I say except a very BIG Thank You for the fantastic recommendation. You have covered all the bases that are important for most travelers. The hotel has many single female travelers stay with us for extended stay. We assist them with all of their tours and travels, as well as many dental clients having professional services performed here. As you stated we make a great home base. I 'am usually in the breakfast area early, before 7 and I try to be here at least 6 days out of the week. Always a great time just having a nice chat and being helpful. Looking forward to your next visit . Warmest Regards Thomas

Hotel Santo Tomas is a true Oasis in the midst of bustling old town San Jose. It is within walking distance of the primary downtown attractions in San Jose. Several tours of all types can be booked from the convenience of the hotel lobby to explore the Costa Rican countryside. The staff is mostly bilingual, and all were very helpful and cheerful. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and well maintained and the grounds have a variety of outdoor areas to lounge about, hold business meetings, or just socialize with the other guests. The hotel has an impressive mixture of international clientele.

Hi Loren, Great that you enjoyed all of the covered and open air terraces. These provide a chance to meet lots of different international travelers. I can easily have 10 different countries represented at any time here , so it is always nice to learn about different cultures. Many single travelers do just what you did and really enjoy the time here. As you mentioned we arrange all types of tours and love to do it. Hope to have you return and thank you for such a nice review. Thomas

Great place to stop over in San Jose. Good location - not far to the central square, near lots of shops, supermarkets, restaurants, the children's museum, and a few quirky galleries. The Colombian restaurant across the road has a good lunch special.
The room was very clean and spacious and well furnished.
The garden/pool/jacuzzi/bar area was nice & clean. The pool was great entertainment for our child. We hung out there for a couple of hours, swam, had a beer and just relaxed.
I really liked all the small pockets of lounge areas- both indoor and outdoor.
A good place to rest & chill out, and a good base for exploring San Jose.
Tom the owner is friendly and welcoming, as are all the staff.
We were just disappointed to have missed out on breakfast since we heard it was really good but left too early.
We recommend & it would be our first choice if we pass through the area again.

Hotel Santo Tomas is 5 minutes from the main square and main walking street. The rooms are back behind the street facade so both the rooms we had were quiet, besides clean and nicely appointed. The breakfast was mediocre, but the coffee was great. The staff was friendly and helpful, and so was the owner, Thomas, who is a friendly American who has owned the hotel and improved it for over 20 years. Most of the guests were European. Everyone was pleasant. I have visited San Jose 5 times, and for the price, this is the best hotel I have stayed in. I definitely would stay at Hotel Santo Tomas again!

Room Tip: We liked Room 7, or any downstairs in the back.
