“Enjoyable Stay”

Stayed three nights before a Caravan tour. Comfortable room, clean, nice public areas. Enjoyed the pool and gardens. I've seen some reviews complaining about service; this is a nice place but you won't pay the prices of hotels with "4 or 5 star service" so don't expect that type of service. Our check in at midnight was slow because there was only one clerk and several waiting to be checked in. But for the most part staff was friendly and we had two very nice and friendly bar tenders. Large dining room with buffet--open air. About 10 minute taxi ride from airport in non commute times; nothing close to walk to so plan on using taxi service.

The rooms and common areas were good. The grounds were very good. Internet is ridiculously expensive (I think it was $10 per hour). The casino is small. The breakfast and dinner buffets were impressive - not 5 star restaurant food but lots of variety. The location is not far from lots of things (airport, downtown), but not walking distance to anything. Taxi prices vary wildly (the same trip can cost $3 or $10), so know your price up front. The hotel has a reputation for being super-luxurious so that might lead to higher cab prices. I don't think the hotel is as good or luxurious as its reputation, but it is a very nice place.

Hotel is located in relative proximity to SJO airport and for a fee of $20 you can conveniently catch a cab. Although the hotel advertises a free, set schedule shuttle service from the airport, the wait of 2 and a half hours was unacceptable to me after a long trip. Hotel has a couple of restaurants with decent but overpriced food, a good bar with live music and a cover charge, a perpetually empty casino and sluggish, impersonal poolside service. Service as a whole leaves a lot to be desired for the claim of caliber of this hotel. I have had more pleasant wait times in my dentist's office compared to the wait for check in/out at the front desk. Hotel rooms are spacious, well decorated and clean. One has to speak fluent Spanish to get room service, which has expensive good food. There is an exercise room with sauna and steam room - all unremarkable. On the way to the very well kept pool you will find a manicured, petite tropical garden. The pool, without doubt, is this hotels most notable feature. Overall, I will consider staying at this hotel again. Really hope they hire motivated staff by that time.

Stayed here at front end of a Caravan Tour and was very pleased. The room was large, clean and comfortable. The overall appearance of the hotel and grounds was very impressive. Best thing was the buffet restaurant, which we enjoyed for two breakfasts and two dinners. The food selection was very broad, including both typical Costa Rican dishes and international cuisine. Service at the hotel was first rate during our stay. There is an internet cafe on-site for $5 per 30 minutes. I should point out that the location of the hotel is in a suburb of San Jose and is not within walking distance of the downtown area. Taxis are required to go anywhere.

Stayed here at the beginning of our Caravan Tour.
The room was fine, the pool was fine. The issue I had with this hotel was the service. We decided we wanted to open the bar in our room for refreshments, it says to call the front desk to get it unlocked. We waited for about 45 minutes for some one to come do this, then I called again and finally someone showed up. When we went to the pool we could see a waitress serving drinks so we waited and waited finally my husband went up to the bar to order drinks. It was at that time that the waitress offered to carrry them back for us. At this point I thought she got the picture that yes indeed we wanted service and drinks by the pool. She did not come back to pick up our empty glases or come to ask if we would like another. Back up to the bar I went this time and the same thing repeated itself over again. ( and YES we tip). Over the course of the afternoon not once did she come and ask if we wanted another drink. When we went to check out we had to get the bar locked so they could charge us for what we consummed, once again I called the front desk to get some one to come, after about an hour wait we went for dinner because no one showed up. After dinner we went to the front desk to ask for someone to come to our room to lock the bar after about 20 minutes the task was complete. We waited for about 2 hours and went down to pay, they had no record of what we consummed so we waited for about 15 minutes while the clerk tried to find the girl who locked the bar, she could not be found anywhere. Finally the fellow at the service desk in frustation said "oh just forget it we wont charge you." The next morning I just knew that we finally had to pay the bill for the mini bar and sure enough they didn't just forget about it the bill was there. I just found that even at the front dest they were not all that friendly or helpful. We felt that all the staff we encountered at this hotel had an indifferent attitude.

This was an impluse vacation, something that my husband and I have never done. We were a bit apprehensive since it had been over thirty years since our last trip to Central America. Our concerns were quickly put rest. The service was wonderful, the day trips OUTSTANDING and the desire to return STRONG. I highly recommend anyone looking for a break from the day to day rush to put your feet up and enjoy an Imperial pool side.

Upon arrival to the hotel, we were gladly told that the hotel was full!!! Even if the night was already paid for and we had a confirmed reservation!, there was nothing to do. We were not the only ones and everyone was quite upset about the situation. We were transferred to another Barcelo hotel (Rincon del Valle) which was OK but no pool, no bar, no gardens, no alchool at the restaurant and the bar, and the hotel is location is quite bad..To compensate they gave us a free dinner, but we did not really enjoy the restaurant there. So not a really good experience!
