If you prefer authentic, traditional local charm over the multinational formula driven hotel chains, this is the place. Thoroughly clean with plenty of polished wood furniture and floors. The hotel restaurant is stylish with open patio doors and outdoor seating just above a lively retail district - and great food.

Staff and security are excellent. Unfortunately a driver dispatched by the hotel failed to connect with my colleague who arrived before me. Although I had prepaid the room, he ended up spending the evening at another hotel. When we returned to San Jose for our return flight after ten days and informed them about the incident, Shirley at the front desk was totally accommodating and offered a free upgrade to a superior room. I really didn't have much of a case, but good customer service was consistent with all the staff that we encountered.

We stayed at the Balmoral in January 2013. We arrived late at night from the airport by taxi. The hotel is good value. The staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast is particularly good and was included in the cost of the room. When we left, we walked across town to catch the bus to Liberia.

after getting into Costa Rica a day early, and a scheduling error with another hotel (mostly my fault), I asked the Taxi driver to get me to a hotel close to the other one as out would only be for one evening. They charged me $150 on a $75/night room. I think the Yahoo driver got a kick back as I noticed hook sticking around longer than he needed to and even after I paid. Seemed odd.

Additionally they are not single male friendly, at all!

Stayed at the Balmoral for two nights. Found the staff to be very accommodating and gracious.

The first room was located in the back of the hotel and was cramped and dark. We requested an upgrade ($10/night) and got a room on the front side overlooking Central Avenue. The street scenes are fun to watch. There was virtually no noise when the windows and curtains were closed.

Breakfast buffet was good with sausage, fruit, breads, and eggs cooked to order.
Location is convenient for downtown business, restaurants, and several great bakeries....

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the front side overlooking Central Avenue

The common areas of the hotel were totally lovely! The bar, restaurant, lobby, computer area were beautiful. We booked 2 rooms booked for 2 separate nights as part of a package. The first night we had a standard room which was on the 4th floor. The room was clean and modern and pretty standard. Closet was HUGE! The second night was several nights later. The hotel gave us an upgraded room on the 2nd floor. It was absolutely lovely! Being our first time in San Jose the streets en route to the hotel were a little iffy looking but having a secure parking area with a 24 hour attendant was appreciated.

Room Tip: Would highly recommend asking if a no charge upgrade is available.

The picture of the hotel does not look anything like what we found at the Balmoral. I would never have found the hotel based on this picture. The room was small and in need of updating. However, it was clean and convenient. the breakfast was very good and plentiful...and did have T V with lots of english channels....Staff was pleasant ...

This our fourth stay, we love it there, the location is great, I love walking the downtown areas, lots to see, the Cafe is great, it faces the street and great to people watch and very close to the casinos, the room was very large, two beds, fridge and WiFi and the use of a computer, the staff has gotten to know us and has always been very friendy, I dont know what else you could want or need. See you guys soon, we plan on staying this time 3 to 4 weeks instead of the two we have been staying. Oh, we always take tours right from there and have also used the bus terminal to travel to the beach and else where.

Room Tip: we like the rooms facing the main street, we love to people watch
