We stayed at Balmoral for our last night in Costa Rica before flying home. We arrived at the hotel at noon because of our transfer, but they had no problem letting us in the room. In fact they upgrade us to a superior room from a standard. It had 2 very comfortable queen size bed in a good sized room with a mini bar. The shower was nice and hot and had lot of water pressure. I really liked the new laminate floor. We didn't hear any noise from outside. The staff spoke good English and were very friendly and helpful. They printed out our boarding passes for the next day's flight, arranged for a packed breakfast (since our flight was too early for us to eat the breakfast there) and even agreed to send our postcards for us. We just had to pay for the postage. They made everything easy, which I really appreciated since I was not feeling well.

Arrived late in San Jose and got to the Hotel. Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was large and very comfortable. The bed was exceptional. The wake up call was very friendly and they also called to say my taxi had arrived. Did not get a chance for the breakfast but will next time. See you in September.

What I liked about it:
- Friendly staff (front desk, maids we even had an issue with the safe and staff was there to help right away).
- Directly on the pedestrian street, in the middle of it all.
- Awesome hot breakfast (made to order omelets, sausages etc.).

What I didn't like:
- Construction in the back from 7AM to 7PM. If you are looking to sleep in don't stay here (or stay in the front facing the street.

Overall the hotel is very basic but for the price it did the trick! I would stay again if I went back to San Jose for sure!

Room Tip: Choose a room in the front of the hotel due to construction in the back.

Though located in a non attractive city, this place is quite nice and very much affordable. The staff were responsive and welcoming, and the room was nice, clean and spacious. It had all the facilities we needed (mini bar, safe). Breakfast was really nice, and all this for a very reasonable price, right in the city center. Would definitely recommend it!

We stayed at Balmoral in December 2013 the last night of our Costa Rica trip before returning to the states. I wish we had stayed here longer. The amenities were great. We stayed at 3 other hotels as we travelled through the country, but Balmoral was by far the best. The resort is very clean and modern. We didn't eat any meals, but we did have a few drinks in the bar. Balmoral will definately be at the top of my list should I return again to Costa Rica.

Room Tip: My only regret is that we didn't stay long enough to enjoy the amenities.

...but maybe a little lacking in some areas.

First, it is in central San Jose. The neighborhood is a little shady after dark, but during the day there is a lot to offer nearby.

Secondly, the rooms are very nice - very fresh and modern. The hallways and lounges on each floor are a little raggedy, but since very little of my time was spent there, it was not important to me.

The personnel is friendly enough, but not overly so. This could be improved.

The internet works very well, except they have blocked Facebook. I suppose an argument could be made that if you're in San Jose, Costa Rica, upset about lack of Facebook, something's wrong. :-)

You could do a lot worse than this place.
