Stayed here one night when we arrived in Costa Rica. Arrived late, 2300hrs and left early, 0630hrs the next day. Rm 517 was a good size, clean and comfortable. Bed was a bit hard though. En-suite fine with complimentary toiletries. Buffet breakfast was included, selection of hot and cold food available. Unable to comment on its location to the city centre's attractions but appeared pretty central. Hadn't done any research as it was just a night stopover.
No noise from the busy pedestrian street below but once did hear some internal plumbing early morning from another room, not sure if this would have caused disturbed sleep if staying longer. From this very short stay I don’t think I would have minded if I was staying longer here.

Room Tip: Too short a stay to say it's quiet all the time but was okay for the one night we stayed.

After staying in a variety of more "rustic" hotels in other cities, we found the Hotel Presidente to be a nice end cap to our week in Costa Rica. Like most CR hotels, it was very clean. The room was well appointed, with white comforters and great mattresses. All the technology worked, including A/C, TV, blow dryer, WiFi and more. Can't say that about everything at other hotels.

The Presidente's downtown location was good for anyone wanting to walk through the heart of the city, with one entrance literally exiting onto the central pedestrian walkway with shops, restaurants and all the people watching anyone could dream about.

The only minus (and I didn't take points away for this...) was the view from our room, which looked down onto the ugly rooftop of an adjoining building. That's often the case with inner city locations.

Breakfast was amazing. Wonderful buffet with huge selection and well-prepared foods.

Great stay, well kept property. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the central avenue are a bit noisy. Not suggested if you need to get to sleep early.

Staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The breakfast (included in room rate) was wonderful!! We had dinner in the restaurant as well and the food was very good. Location provides easy access to the downtown shopping area but our room was quiet despite the busy street below.

We had reserved a junior suite for two nights which was not ready when we checked in around 3pm so they gave us a suite on the top floor. It was a large 2 room set up with the most unappealing décor. The room had a long list of deficiencies which where not acceptable so I presented a list to the front desk. No Towel racks, no bar fridge, no robes, no bottle water, no ice bucket were part of the list and by the time we had returned from an afternoon walk most were addressed! The manager even gave us a complimentary airport transfer! Breakfast was very good and the room was clean and quiet. Great location for seeing downtown San Jose which you can do in a day. Safe area now I guess as police are in 2 story look-out towers every two blocks!

Room Tip: Go for at least a junior suite but tell them if you are not happy as they want to do their best.

I can highly recommend staying at the Hotel Presidente in San Jose. We stayed there for four nights (March 2014) and had a wonderful time. The location, the rooms (the beds!), the breakfast and, last but not least, the people at the hotel were wonderful. So if you go to San Jose, this is where you should stay.
