“A step back in time”
Reviewed 19 January 2014

This beautiful Victorian building has such old worldly charm but with all modern amenities required for the perfect stay.
It is set a short walk away from the bustling centre of San Jose on a quiet side street. Check in was efficient and quick although as with all Costa Rican hotels we visited you are given a welcome drink while standing filling out paperwork the minute you arrive. Not at all relaxing especially after 18 hours in transit.
We had room 17 which was lovely and had everything required for our two night stay. It was very private and hidden by lush planting in the courtyard. Toiletries were generic but ok, bed was lovely with comfy pillows. Widescreen tv if you need it, two ceiling fans, quiet air con and opening windows so plenty of ways to adjust the temperature.
The hotel is quirky with small courtyards and internal gardens, a small sun terrace with tropical planting and two small jacuzzis. You can eat inside or out in the beautiful central courtyard. Dinner was superb as was the good choice of al a carte breakfast. Again like most hotels here food is very expensive but at least here it was superb. The staff are very formal but very efficient.
If you come to San Jose this hotel is a must on all fronts.

Room Tip: We had room 17 which was lovely and quiet but I imagine all rooms here are lovely.

This is by far my favorite hotel in San Jose. We stayed for one night and most everything was closed in San Jose because of Easter. We stayed in that night, and the restaurant was exquisite. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

was my initial response to this lovely property. Everything is done with perfection, upon check in we were given a truly refreshing welcome drink, the staff, smartly dressed, professional and helpful quickly got us into our room. Room was small but tasteful, small intererior garden added some interest, quiet a/c, excellent reading lights, mattress also excellent, as this is often questionable in many countries. Bath very clean and fully equipped with everything one would require. Dining room and bar area absolutely beautiful...one felt almost as if stepping back in time, old world elegance, excellent service and delicious food. Breakfast was also a very positive experience, full menu and memorable service. Cannot emphasize enough how understated yet elegant the lobby is, outside landscaping is also done with thought...all in all such a positive experience, an experience that if at all possible one should include in any Costa Rican itinerary. We so enjoyed our stay here.

We stayed one night on the way to and from the south Pacific coast and thoroughly enjoyed our stays both times. The hotel had just what we were looking for for an overnight stop in San Jose: lovely comfortable spacious rooms, old world elegance, wonderful food and good service. We would stay there again on our next trip to Costa Rica.

Only stayed one night--arriving late and leaving early--but the grandeur and comfort of this place was impressive. We stayed at another well regarded hotel in San Jose and this one was far nicer (and more expensive). If you like small, boutique hotels with charming décor and indoor spaces, you will like this place. The only drawback is that it's not as close as other hotels to the main tourist attractions of the city and it's not a great area for walking around.

We stayed two nights at Grano de Oro at the start and end of a rafting trip in the rainforest. The hotel service was great. They knew we were coming back and so offered to store our extra luggage before we asked. We needed to find an ATM and were given a map to a very secure location within 4 blocks. I loved the ambience of the restaurant and our meals were good. The first night we had the chateaubriand and the cardamom sea bass - both amazing.
Our tour company described this as being close to the main touring areas of San Jose, which I wouldn't agree with. During the day it may be OK, but we were warned to be very careful walking around in the evening.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem to be very different and interesting.

We stayed two nights here, once at the start and once at the end of our holiday over Xmas & New Years 2013/14.

Not quite central, more a residential kind of neighbourhood just to the east of centre, the Grano de Oro is a beautiful colonial style boutique hotel with very good levels of service (though not excellent/5* [more on that later]), very comfy beds, surprisingly quiet rooms, and a fabulous restaurant (if a little pricey) with a delightful courtyard setting for breakfast.

Our first night we were in rooms 14 and 15 (queen bed in each), ground floor near reception and a little susceptible to lobby noise (though not late), which were modest and adequate if unimpressive. Second night we were in room 19 which was delightful, highly recommended, with two queen beds and zero noise problems and a lot more charm being situated off another quaint courtyard.

There is no pool, not even a small one, which was disappointing, but two decent hot-tubs partly make up for this.

Regarding service, our flights home were cancelled and the like of 5* service showed when we asked the hotel for help. We had to do all the chasing and make all the phonecalls ourselves, for which we were charged (albeit at a concessionary rate - $32 of calls granted to us for $10). Compare this to the Mandarin Oriental in Singapore where we had a similar problem and the hotel staff treated us like royalty and did all the hard work for us, greatly reducing the stress element.

Overall very good, 100% recommend and will be my hotel of choice whenever back in San Jose.

Room Tip: Room 19 > 14 & 15.
