“A special hotel in San Jose”
Reviewed 26 January 2014

My wife and I stayed here on our first and second night in Costa Rica after travelling from the UK and arriving late in the evening. This place was an oasis of quiet, calm and luxury in San Jose. Lovely decor, attentive staff and a fantastic restaurant. Hot tubs on the roof and an open and airy feel to the whole place. Not the cheapest in town but definitely recommended if you have had a long journey or have been roughing it in the jungle for a few days and are in need of some luxury!!

We decided to spend our last night in Costa Rica in San Jose. The hotel is fantastic with lots of character and wonderful staff at reception (restaurant staff not quite as good see below). However, San Jose has very little to offer and the hotel is located in a unattractive area with nothing else to offer. However it is not far from the centre which also has little going for it. We did visit a few of the historic building left in the city and visited the museum which was interesting as it gave us some insight into the original indigenous population. Some fantastic gold artefacts. We ate at the hotel in the evening (had lunch at the old Theatre which was pleasant) and the food was OK but not the fine dining it purports to be. Almost there but too many silly little mistakes and the waiters could take a lesson in how to be pleasant. If you are looking for a night in San Jose the hotel is definitely worth considering and our room was wonderful but they could do a bit better.

Full of character and beautifully decorated. Stayed 2 separate nights, one at the beginning and the other at the end of our trip. Both times the rooms were lovely, one on the ground floor and the other in a plant filled quiet garden area . Breakfast in the delightful courtyard was substantial and very tasty. We ate in the restaurant on our last night - an elegant evening of fine dining. A perfect way to start and end our holiday.

We stayed 2 nights on separate occasions. The hotel is built in colonial style and totally charming. The triple room off a courtyard was very quiet and comfortable. Excellent restaurant, part in an open courtyard setting, and the staff could not be more friendly and helpful. Not cheap but great value for money. Situated out of town centre. Locality nothing to write home about but we were happy to stay in the hotel. About 30 mins taxi ride from the airport.

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor room off a courtyard.

We stayed our first night and last night at the Grano de Oro. What a very nice and superb way to start and end a unique and memorable vacation. My wife and I were delighted all the way: very nice room and unique set-up with small garden and waterfall IN the room, excellent food and very attentionate staff. We felt welcomed and cared for. Imagine how important your first night and last night expriences are to set the tone of a unique vacation. Thanks a lot.

This beautiful Victorian building has such old worldly charm but with all modern amenities required for the perfect stay.
It is set a short walk away from the bustling centre of San Jose on a quiet side street. Check in was efficient and quick although as with all Costa Rican hotels we visited you are given a welcome drink while standing filling out paperwork the minute you arrive. Not at all relaxing especially after 18 hours in transit.
We had room 17 which was lovely and had everything required for our two night stay. It was very private and hidden by lush planting in the courtyard. Toiletries were generic but ok, bed was lovely with comfy pillows. Widescreen tv if you need it, two ceiling fans, quiet air con and opening windows so plenty of ways to adjust the temperature.
The hotel is quirky with small courtyards and internal gardens, a small sun terrace with tropical planting and two small jacuzzis. You can eat inside or out in the beautiful central courtyard. Dinner was superb as was the good choice of al a carte breakfast. Again like most hotels here food is very expensive but at least here it was superb. The staff are very formal but very efficient.
If you come to San Jose this hotel is a must on all fronts.

Room Tip: We had room 17 which was lovely and quiet but I imagine all rooms here are lovely.

This is by far my favorite hotel in San Jose. We stayed for one night and most everything was closed in San Jose because of Easter. We stayed in that night, and the restaurant was exquisite. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
