“Perfect stopover”
Reviewed 25 February 2014

On our first stay in Grano de Oro, our flight from Miami was nearly 3 hours late and, as a result we only had a very short night in a beautiful and comfortable room in the old part of the hotel. We did not even have time for breakfast before we left in the morning. The room had its own private garden and water feature and the large old-fashioned bathroom was a delight. We returned to the hotel at the end of our stay in Costa Rica when we had more time to enjoy the hotel. We were not allocated a room in the old part of the hotel on this occasion but our room was still excellent, with a pretty small garden and water feature, although perhaps with a little less character than the first room. We had dinner and breakfast in the elegant courtyard restaurant. The food was very good but the service initially was slow and we had to gee-up the waiter. The concierge was very helpful in directing us to a very simple local restaurant for lunch and he was very particular about our taking the appropriate care (no jewellery etc) when walking in San Jose. We have already recommended this hotel to our friends and would stay there again ourselves. Given the nature of the hotel: originally a Victorian Villa, there is no room for a swimming pool etc. Thank you to Imagine Latin America and their excellent local agent: San Germain Tours for arranging this hotel for us.

Room Tip: Try to have at least one night in a room in the original part of the hotel

We arrived at Hotel Grano de Oro after a long day of travel. Upon entering, it was as if we were enveloped in a peaceful oasis. The staff was very welcoming and immediately helpful. Our room was spacious and charming, as we were in one of the rooms with an adjoining private garden. The rich and tasteful furnishings made us not want to leave the room. It is located away from the bustling city center almost in a neighborhood setting making it very quiet. There is necessity shopping about 3-4 blocks away and it is a 30-40 minute walk to the museums and National Theater. The resturant is fantastic! It certainly lives up to its tripadvisor reputation in our experience.

Room Tip: The rooms with adjoining private gardens are superb.

We spent two nights at this lovely small hotel in the heart of San Jose, Costa Rica. The desk staff was warm, welcoming and helpful. They gave us a complimentary upgrade to a superior room from the standard room we had reserved. It was spacious and well furnished. The mattress was comfortable, the bed linens were first-rate. The bathroom had a large bath tub, nice amenities and soft towels. The room had two nice chairs and a table as well as a desk. The complimentary breakfast had several excellent choices; the food and service were excellent.

We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant twice because it was so good! The chef concentrates on French food and incorporates traditional Central American foods into his recipes. Everything was delicious and the ambiance could not be beat.

I highly recommend a stay at this wonderful old-world hotel.

A beautiful old world hotel. While the rooms are a bit small, they were quite comfortable. The hotel is only a block and a half off the central avenue, but the beautiful gardens made us feel like we were in the remote jungle. The restaurant is world class, but very European. The only caveat is the "free shuttle" which the driver asked for money on both occasions.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden room. Some of the rooms are buried underground

My partner and I stayed here for one night at the end of our week trip in Costa Rica in March 2013. It was a fantastic way to end our vacation. The hotel is small and feels like a boutique hotel. I was impressed with the furnishings in our room and bathroom, and the restaurant, with its outdoor courtyard, is charming. A few other reviewers commented on the hotel's location. When we first arrived I thought the location seemed a little odd and out of the way. But after spending a little time in San Jose, I think the location is excellent. The neighborhood feels quiet and safe and the central part of town is only a 15/20 minute walk, or a very short cab ride away. It's within easy walking distance of a fairly large and nice park as well as a handful of restaurants and convenience stores. If you're staying in San Jose before or after your trip, I recommend staying here rather than near the airport. While the city doesn't have a tremendous amount to offer in terms of tourist attractions, it's worth checking out and you can't go wrong with this hotel. (It is also easy to get to/from the airport if you have a rental car.)

My husband and I stayed one night at Hotel Grano de Oro on a recent trip to Costa Rica. The hotel staff was easy to deal with during online bookings. We arrived during the early morning hours and were allowed immediate check in. The front desk and bell staff were friendly and accommodating and helped us to our room. The room was luxurious with a comfortable bed and modern decorations and amenities. The hotel is located in a safe area and we walked to the city center and to a nearby restaurant for dinner. We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Grano de Oro and would definitely choose this hotel again.
