“The Perfect Base in San Jose!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2014

The Grano de Oro was our last stop on a two-week trip to Costa Rica. We arrived at the Grano de Oro on March 10th, around 10:30 am, after flying to San Jose from Punta Islita. This was my wife’s first trip to Costa Rica and my fourth. We also stayed at Hotel Manatus, El Silencio Lodge, and the Hotel Punta Islita, all of which I have also reviewed.

We only stayed at the Grano de Oro for one night, but it was so outstanding it deserves its own review! The converted Victorian mansion is just fabulous from top to bottom. There are photos on all the walls in the passageways that were extremely interesting, and I wished for some kind of information about them but nothing was available. They were all taken over the last 100 years or so and showed so much about the development of Costa Rica.

We had booked the special garden suite on the first floor, and it was ready for us upon arrival. The gareden suite was all the we expected. It was spacious, well appointed, clean, and most of all, it felt like home. The bathroom with its huge Jacuzzi was perfect.

We originally planned to venture into town for the afternoon to visit some museums, however we ended up changing our plans and decided to stay in at the hotel. This turned out to be a great decision. We ended up having lunch and dinner, two of our best meals in Costa Rica, at the hotel's restaurant which is world class and as good as any you will find in the world's culinary capitals. Absolutely outstanding!

After experiencing the level of comfort and service at the Grano de Oro, we will absolutely not return to Costa Rica without making it our first and last stop. Bravo Grano de Oro! Thank you so much!

All the best,

Roberto and Juanita

Room Tip: The Garden Suite is truly superb!

The staff here at the Hotel Grano de Oro we very friendly and helpful. The rooms were very comfortable and extremely clean. The open air style was very romantic. The restaurant was very good and a good selection of international wine. The neighborhood was not one of the best, but you felt secure inside the hotel walls.

Difficult to talk about this very nice hotel because we checked in late in the evening and checked out very early in the morning the day after! (Twice by the way-:()
This small hotel is probably one of the best of San Jose and all the armosphere breaths this amazing and gorgeous colonial style.
A delicious diner taken in the patio under an umbrella, the restaurant is well known in the city and is a real "place to be" in the center of San jose.
A warm welcome by a staff taking good care of you and despite the location in the center of the city, the hotel is quiet enough.
Our room was fully equiped with all amenities you can expect from this kind of hotel but a little small, anyway we had a good short stay.
Wifi in the main lobby as well as in the bar or in the restaurant.
Terrace on the roof but no time to enjoy the view or the jaccuzi.
We will return if we have the chance to come back in CR!

We stayed at this hotel for several nights while visiting San Jose prior to a tour. It is a wonderfully renovated old mansion, with fountains and green areas intermixed with the rooms. The sundeck and whirlpool area is a nice place to relax and enjoy the sun. The room was very nice and roomy, as was the bath. The staff is exceptionally friendly and responsive. Although the location is away from the center of the city, it is an easy $4-7 cab ride, depending on which part of the center you want to go to. Sabana park and the Art Museum are within an easy walk and there are a number of nearby restaurants. We would definitely stay here again.

I came to this hotel about 15 years ago. It was quaint then and we loved it. Each time I come back it has changed a little - bigger and more beautiful - although I still have a soft spot in my heart for the old place. This time I stayed in Room 22 - with doors that opened out into a garden area that used to be part of the restaurant. It was very pleasant. The new restaurant is gorgeous with great food. The lunch and breakfast service was good, but the dinner service was very slow. The front desk staff were quite helpful. I will continue to come back here every chance I get. When I first started to book this reservation on the web it said there were no rooms available for the dates I wanted (the end of February. I had to go through a travel agent to get the rooms I wanted.

Room Tip: I think I stayed on room 22 - it has doors that open out into a garden area. My friend paid more for...

I have been to Costa Rica twice and both times have started by journey with a stay at Grano de Oro. First I like the idea of staying at a locally owned and operated hotel when I travel and this is one of my favorites. The grounds and rooms are immaculate and beautiful. The service is friendly and professional and the restaurant is fantastic. Whether it's an overnight stay or a base for local travel I don't think you can do much better.

We chose the Grano d Oro because we needed a place to stay on our way to Arenal and on way back from Manuel Antonio. The hotel is elegant and comfortable and the family suite was the perfect place to begin and end our time in Costa Rica.

Room Tip: The family suite was a good size for our family of two adults and three children.
