“Consistantly Great”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 March 2009

My wife and I stayed at the Grano De Oro twice in February 2009. We have been visiting Grano De Oro for 4 years now and we have always been impressed by the consistancy of this wonderful little hotel. On the first night in Feb we were in room 23 which is one of the older rooms. It opens to its own little patio and was quite pleasant. We ate breakfast in the restaraunt the next morning and it was great. We have been visiting this hotel since before they built the current restaraunt. The old one was nice, but the new one is incredible. It is rare to see so much pride in quality of service.
On our second night in February we stayed in room 8 which is one of the more modern rooms up above the restaraunts courtyard. This room was so nice it bordered on opulent. It was a mix of classic Costa Rican wood work and nice modern amenities. The bathroom was quite nice with lots of counter space and a big bath tub. The room also had nice windows that gave a great view of the mountains south of San Jose.
If you are considering staying at Grano De Oro I highly reccomend it. You might consider asking for one of the newer rooms or at least ask for an upstairs room. That will be the best way to avoid the rooms that some trip advisor members have complained about.
Another new addition to the hotel is shuttle service to the airport. Thay have a driver that was very accomodating and the trip cost $25 in a van as opposed to a teeny cab.

This was my second stay at Grano de oro, and the first once since it expanded and re-modelled. The rooms were very comfortable. The location is great if you have to do something in or near San Jose. The restaurant is great--probably the most elegant in town with good food and professional service.

This is a classy little hotel on the edge of downtown San Jose. In any more tourist-oriented metropolis, this place would probaby cost $250/night.

The front desk staff are strong English-speakers, good at giving directions and writing upside down. Our room was modest in size, with attractive furniture and a spotless private bathroom.

We spent a relaxing, romantic evening in the jacuzzi and then the outdoor restaurant. The next day we were able to walk to the city center, the zoo, and back without exhausting ourselves.

The hotel is two blocks from the Calle Central, Paseo Colon, in a commercial area with a few banks, restaurants (real and fast food), and a convenience store within a few blocks. Parking is limited, but there is a security guy in the evening watching the cars who will help you find a spot. Very convenient to Highway 1 if you're planning to drive; 10 minutes from the airport.

If we find ourselves back in San Jose, not sure why that would happen, we would stay here again. Also, I have no idea what Costa Rican TV is like in general, but we were able to watch lots of American programming in English, even the new episode of LOST.

my husband and i spent our first and last nights of our honeymoon in costa rica at hotel grano de oro. it is a very cute hotel with an excellent french restaurant. the breakfasts there are amazing. we got to order off a menu and get great food instead of having a buffet to grab mediocre food from. the little courtyard in the middle of the restaurant is a great place to have breakfast and start the day. the rooms in the hotel were decent sized and clean. there are two hot tubs on the top floor of the hotel which were a nice bonus. the hotel staff was very accommodating and helped us with all our questions. they even had breakfast boxed for us when we told them we had to leave at 4am for the airport. because of our limited time in san jose and the nonstop rain, we didn't get to explore the area around the hotel.

Wow - this was a great find! This hotel was recommended to us by the staff at Hotel Cuna Del Angel, near Dominical. We needed to be near the airport for an afternoon flight back to Canada, but we didn't really want to stay at the airport. This gave us the opportunity to drive into San Jose and stroll around a bit and it was a great value. Although we had a standard room the accomodation was very nice. I love the way they have kept the distinctive details of the old building intact, while making it feel very modern and updated. The fountains and gardens are wonderful; but most of all I loved the restaurant! The decor, the service and the food - was amazing - on par or better, than many other high-end restaurants that I have eaten in in Paris, London, Toronto, New York. Definitely a place to keep in mind.

This was the 4th and final stop in our Costa Rican honeymoon and San Jose was only a 1-night stay originally intended as a rest day before we headed back for NY via San Jose "Aeroporto". Upon arrival, the bellboy was friendly and courteous and with our very first step into the air conditioned lobby through the huge glass automatic doors- my wife and I immediately wished we'd booked an extra night. It looked and felt luxurious, grand, and charismatic. The quick glimpse of the restaurant to the left of the lobby prompted an immediate reservation for dinner in an hour. We were not let down. We ordered grilled scallops, sea bass, and a chicken pastry plate that left our hunger more than satisfied - but still yearning for more. One Tres Leches and 3 Coladas later, we felt the irresistible urge to rush to our rooms to luxuriate in their impeccably clean tub. Set up a 7AM wake-up call for one of the better breakfasts of our stay in CR and walk up to town by 9am for some impossibly inexpensive souvenir shopping.

Had a fantastic time in the Grano de Oro when we had an overnight stay in mid Jan. We stayed in The Garden suite which was lovely. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The food in the resturant was suberb, service excellent, with a fantastic ambience. Highly recommended!
