We loved Grano de Oro. We didn't love San Jose, but had to stay one night to catch our plane home. Thank goodness we had such a nice hotel to come back to after exploring the city. We did like the Museo de Oro (Pre-Columbian gold museum), but other than that, didn't find a lot to love about San Jose. The hotel is another matter all together. It's removed from the gritty, congested center of the city, and is just lovely. The service is fantastic, and we loved our room, (#19) facing a leafy courtyard. It did seem like some of the other rooms could be noisy, as there was a "silencio" sign outside of one located in a trafficked hallway. The breakfast at the lovely hotel restaurant was the best meal we had all week. If you have to be in San Jose, the Grano de Oro is the place to stay.

Great property! I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Exceptional service, excellent restaurant, and a peaceful location in a not-quite-so-hospitable town.

There didn't appear to be air conditioning here, but the night was so comfortable, it wasn't needed. The hotel is a bit of a jumble - looking like a mash-up of more than one property. But that really isn't a problem since each little nook and cranny created by the many walkways and alleyways were well appointed with native plants and/or artwork.

Overall, Grano de Oro was a very lovely, very inviting property.

The Grano de Oro is a little gem to be found in the unspectacular San Jose. Costa Rica is such a stunning country that this was the perfect place to start a vacation. The hotel is in the west of the city, a $20-25 cab ride from the international airport and about $15-20 from the local airport (Sansa, NatureAir). The actual hotel is beautiful but the surrounding buildings/area are more typical of San Jose - a little urban run down.

The staff are excellent and provided a very warm welcome after a long flight. The main reception area is very nice but the rooms are really a treat. It feels like you are staying at your wealthy friend's country house. You feel immediately at home and relaxed, not like a hotel at all in that way.

What is really remarkable about this hotel is the restaurant. It's simply excellent. It offers some of the best food we had in Costa Rica and compares very favourably with top class restaurants in London, New York etc. The prices are high for Costa Rica but reasonable when you consider the quality. If you stay here, eat here. If you don't stay here, come here to eat! The cocktails are excellent also!

If I return to San Jose, there is nowhere else I would even consider staying. Truly excellent.

We spent 3 nites in this lovely boutique hotel in #10, a Deluxe King room on the second floor. It was attractive and comfortable with large windows overlooking the hotel entrance and front street.
While the entire hotel is loaded with character, the highlight for us was the beautiful dining room with its plant-filled courtyard, interesting artwork, luxurious decor, stained glass windows and sparkling lights. We ate half a dozen meals there and the food was consistently delicious, ranking up with the best we’ve had during our travels to many parts of the globe. An impressive wine list, top-notch service and (for that calibre of dining) reasonable pricing as well.
Staff throughout the hotel were very friendly and helpful. Honest too- a handbag that was left behind in the bar was returned with everything- including money, credit cards, and ID- intact.
What we found truly unfortunate was most of the neighbouring properties are surrounded by high, barbwire-topped walls or heavy iron security fences and we were warned by hotel staff and other locals that it was not safe to walk around outside after dark (5 PM) because there had been a lot of armed robberies in San Jose.
We arranged our private tour of the country and the hotel booking through Costa Rica Expeditions and would recommend them highly. Our CRE guides were excellent at identifying flora, locating elusive fauna and explaining sites and customs of significance. The vehicles were clean and comfortable and the drivers were competent and safety-conscious. ( After observing other local drivers and experiencing some of the muddy, narrow, heavily-rutted roads which wound up and down mountains , we were glad we had decided not to rent a car and drive ourselves. )

We just left San Jose and stayed at the Grano de Oro on both our first and last nights in Costa Rica. The hotel is fantastic. The decor is very up to date while still maintaining a French Colonial feel to it. The check-in process was quick and easy and they even gave us an upgrade to a nicer room. The prices are very reasonable - the cost for our standard room (which was upgraded) was around $123 a night. Both of our rooms were clean, simply, but elegantly furnished, with updated bathrooms. The best part of the hotel was the restaurant. We ate four meals here and I wish I could take it home with me. Absolutely fantastic food for relatively reasonable prices (compared to the same type of restaurant in the U.S.). This hotel is great. A couple of points - the area around it isn't very nice, but probably no worse than anywhere in San Jose. We just stayed in the hotel, but the neighborhood didn't feel dangerous. Also, be forewarned that there is no A/C in the rooms. They have ceiling fans and it is designed to sleep with the windows open. The temperatures were in the mid/upper 60s at night and it was very comfortable, even with the window closed. I highly recommend the Grano de Oro (and especially the restaurant).

We chose Hotel Grano de Oro for our 6 day vacation to San Jose, Costa Rica.

Hotel:

We made our reservation directly with the hotel and the process was quick and easy. A week before arrival we were contacted to ask if we wanted to arrange airport to hotel transport for $30. This is actually a good deal because the service is private, safe and clean.

The hotel is actually a gorgeous Victorian house that has been converted into a small hotel. We stayed in room 1 for our visit which is a small, comfortable room located very near the lobby area. The room was relatively quiet, very chic with a nice bathroom. The one drawback is that the bed is small and firm.
The bed seemed too small for comfort. The hotel provides free WiFi and in-room safe (need to ask for the key, and if you lose it it’s a $10 surcharge).

We particularly enjoyed the fresh fruit juices served during breakfast (at no cost). In fact, breakfast was great at this hotel. However, dinner is relatively expensive. Expect to spend $50 or more for two on dinner at the Grano de Oro Restaurant. The hotel is located close to (walking distance) Kentucky Fried Chicken, Quiznos, Pizza Hut and various other chain fast food venues.

The spa services were great and not over-priced. Lara gave my wife a hot stone massage and me a regular massage.

The staff was exceptionally polite and all seemed fluent in English.

Location:

The location was not great but good. It was a long walk from downtown San Jose. However, the Sabana bus runs near by and for ₡150 ($0.27) will drop you off in downtown. You can chose to get off at either the National Theatre or the National Museum. The buses seemed safe and were reliable. The drivers were more than willing to suggest what stop to get off on and would even let us know when we had arrived.

Hotels seem to always recommend taxis. City buses are much cheaper and in this case, can get you anywhere in the city.

Just a block away from the hotel there is a small one screen movie theater – we watched an Oscar nominate foreign film (in Spanish). There is also a theater with play productions, but none were playing while we were there.

San Jose:
San Jose is surprisingly small. This makes it easy to see most of the sites in a few days. Often we were back in our room by nightfall so we are not sure how the city operates at night. However, from what we saw, San Jose is probably enjoyable for day and night activities.

My husband and I absolutely loved the Grano de Oro. For whatever reason, we were upgraded to a suite and it was one of the most beautiful and charming rooms I've ever had the privilege of staying in. The tile floor and rich woods were unique and elegant. The room had an AMAZING view of San Jose and the surrounding mountains. Our room had a hot tub and we took a long soak and watched the clouds roll in off the mountains. The restaurant is just as beautiful - tastefully decorated with excellent service. We had a GREAT time and it was the perfect end to our trip. HIGHLY recommended.
