As the theatre was right next door to our hotel, it was a must do to visit whilst we were in San Jose. The decoration and style is reminiscent of European theatres of a similar era and as such are simply stunning. We also enjoyed coffee and the best cakes in Costa Rica in the cafe. This has got to be a must do to visit for any traveller to San Jose.

I visited in May 2014.

The theatre is "the" architectural sight of San Jose. The outside of the building is beautiful and the main foyer and the staircase with its statues, paintings and the gold plating on the walls is incredible. The main hall itself is equally stunning. Well worth a visit!

Located downtown in a very busy plaza, it is a beautiful theater. I liked the fact that it looks well cared for and kept in its original beauty. Reminded me of Paris because of its design. A must if you are touring the city.

The best way to take in the Theater is for free and doesn't involve going inside!

There is so much hustle and bustle going on outside that it is the perfect place to people watch.

You can get some great photos of the exterior of the theater as well.

I enjoyed having a coffee, relaxing on a bench nearby, and taking it all in!

It was a great way to START my day.

Beautiful building constructed between 1892-1894 because the coffee barons were so upset about an international touring company bypassing their city. The wood is fabulous and there is lots of marble and large sculptures that have been taken off the outside and brought inside. San Jose, this theatre, was only the third place in the world to get electricity (behind Paris [the city of lights] and New York City. The theatre seats can be removed, and then there is a screw-type machine that raises the floor to level with the stage to have a grand ballroom. Do use the bathroom, and make sure to visit the President's box. I highly recommend getting a guide - $7 and worth every penny because you would miss quite a bit without. English spoken very well, and they're very knowledgeable.

The café attached is quite good and reasonably priced.
