“The definition of value for your money”

For value and price Hotel Aranjuez simply cannot be beat. We stayed in a standard room, which was bright and airy with a large private bathroom and cable tv. It was not luxurious, but everything was clean and we felt very safe. It's a fun hotel to explore since it's five houses strung together. The best part of all is the breakfast, which is absolutely delicious and served in a lovely garden.

We stayed here for our only night in San Jose, and it was lovely. We took the public bus from the airport (cost of about 75 cents, and super easy!) and then a taxi from the bus station (another $3). We did not have a reservation, and the only room available was a deluxe double with private bath for $43. Frankly, this was a little out of our budget (we were hoping for a shared-bathroom), but we decided to stay because it such a lovely hotel. The bathroom was spare but clean and not smelly (which we found to be a problem in some other hotel). The walls are definitely thin. We listened to an entire phone conversation of a fellow hotel guest talking to a friend back home about his real estate adventures while in Costa Rica. Pretty annoying, actually.

I've read all the reviews below, and the description of the houses joined together to form the sprawling hotel grounds is spot-on. I'd just add that because of this layout, there are nooks and areas throughout the hotel with comfy lounge chairs for folks to sit and read and plan the next part of their journey.

We found the gentleman at reception very cold and only grudgingly answered our questions. Maybe he was just having a bad couple of days.

The absolute best part of our stay was the extravagant breakfast in the morning. Endless platters of different kinds of food (you won't be able to try one of everything because there are simply too many things to try), and an omelet/egg bar, where a member of the staff takes your order and whips it up as you wait.

We didn't like San Jose itself very much, but the hotel was lovely and pretty good value.

Consider yourself lucky if you can get a room at Hotel Aranjuez in San Jose.
Clean and spacious rooms. Amazing breakfast buffet, good location (15 min. walk to downtown).
Staff are friendly and helpful, especially the owner. One of the best places we stayed during our trip.

This is one of the few places we haven´t had a private bathroom and you really don´t need it here. The shared bathrooms are excellent and not shared by many rooms anyway. They are the best showers we have had in central america (both hot and powerful, very rare)! Odd that they charge so much more for private bathrooms - without is nearly half price with but rooms are otherwise pretty much the same (both very good). You can walk to the centre of San Jose in 15-20 minutes but it´s very quiet here at night. The building(s) is lovely and very interesting but the highlight has to be the breakfast (included in room price). A huge amout of choice yet very fresh and declicious and in great garden setting.

Came to costa rica for our honeymoon. Stayed first night in the Aranjuez. My wife's uncle drove us from the airport, but I've been told this ride can be $20 in a taxi. No problems during our stay. rooms were very clean and the bed was good. Tico beds are not luxurious. Had a private room and shower. If you go anywhere in costa rica during the rainy season, reservations may not be totally necessary but can help with the cost. Aranjuez was the exception to this...there was a last minute deal if you simply showed up that may have saved us $6...not a big deal.

Breakfast was huge and very good and included in the cost of the room. We both loved it. Aranjuez is in an older neighborhood and the hotel looks like a series of buildings that have been put together with a common roof/breezeways.

From here, we went to Volcano Irazu and the road out of town was easy to find and negotiate.

The hotel is not in a centric area but hardly any are, and anyway they always advice to take taxis (which for short distances are very cheap).
The rooms were clean, basic, with TV, safe and phone with free local phone calls.
Breakfast in the gardens: great both food (omelette and pancake station, fresh fruit, pastries and typical pintos) and location. However the gardens also allow insects to be around (if you can ask for a room aways from the garden).
The walls are thin and some of the rooms (those to the street) are a bit too noisy.
However don't let this put you off, its very good value for money (and with free internet access).

We stayed at the Hotel Aranjuez on 2 seperate nights while in Costa Rica. Like they advertise all of the rooms are different. We chose the deluxe room @ $47 a night. The first night's room was okay and just a little crowded with 3 beds, but on the second time the room was much nicer with a queen bed only.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean and so was the rooms.
Now for the best part - The breakfast buffet - Quality and quanity.
We needed a place to drop off our rental car on one occasion and a place to stay before our morning flight back home at the end of our trip. This is it.
