“Friendly and charming”

Our family of 4 spent 2 separate nights as we were traveling through San Jose. The location is in an older, historic part of the city. The decor is unique and interesting with many nooks to explore filled with interesting local art work. The staff were very friendly and helpful. You can exchange money at the going bank rate. The breakfast buffet was great with lots of choices. Our room was a family suite (2 rooms separated by a bath) on the 3rd floor. It was clean and comfortable although might be hard to access for anyone with mobility problems. If you have difficulty climbing stairs, you may want to ask for a ground floor room as there are no elevators available. Overall, a wonderful place in a bustling, noisy city.

My husband and I spent one night here - the management and staff were courteous and helpful and every pass in the hallway was met with a smiling "pura vida!". Enjoyed the beautiful cool patios with lovely water features and wonderful local artisan tiles and sculptures. Ask the manager about them. There's a great story to be told here. Our standard room was comfortable and roomy enough, on 3rd floor. Coffee and food in restaurant were exceptional.

We have stayed in Costa Rica's capital a few times over the past 10 years of travel to this great tropical setting but have usually tried to avoid the Central Valley as it really is so much different from the rest of the country. San Jose is a big, sprawling jumble of small homes surrounded by businesses and factories so it was nice to be surprised by this oasis in the old/classic part of the city. The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly, especially Steve and Allen, as they seemed to geniunely wish our short stay to be comfortable. Yes, it is in a busy part of the city and I wish that all the motorcylces had adequate mufflers, but I think the service and surroundings make up for that. The breakfast, that was included, had many more items and was superior to other hotels we have stayed in the past. It is close to the downtown and several good restaurants within walking distance (we like El Mundo very much) so, if you feel you want to stay a night in the city, the DON CARLOS is a good choice!

Room Tip: Rooms towards the interior or back of the hotel, likely are not as noisy!

My gf and I stayed on 2 separate nights....both nights were awfully noisy and we had a terrible time sleeping. The staff is excellent, especially the restaurant staff, but the hotel is just an old home that was expanded a series of times with no regard for layouts, noise or sleeping comfort. There are no noise abatement features! No carpeting, area rugs or heavy drapes...You can hear ALL the neighbors, all the people walking on the ceramic tiles, doors slamming and all the talking! No matter which room you choose. I pleaded with the service clerk, but he admitted, all the rooms have the same issue. We are not high maintenance , but after traveling for 8 hours, a good night rest is not too much to ask for. We woke up really tired and did not have much energy to enjoy the following days activity.

This place totally caught us by surprise. We ended up here only because our original reservation at a different hotel fell through, and we didn't quite know what to expect, based on what we read in our guidebook. But having experienced it, we absolutely would stay again. You need to understand that this isn't an ultra-modern hotel; if you want that, stay at the Holiday Inn downtown, or one of the airport hotels, all of which are almost certainly fine. And if you want something a bit more elegant, try Hotel le Bergerac. What this place has is tons of personality. The ground floor is almost like being in a Costa Rican art museum, with artwork displayed all over the place. The ground floor extends much farther than you think it will, with lots of little mini-lounges; you could happily spend a day here, finding somewhere to sit with a cup of coffee and a good book. The rooms are perfectly fine -- clean, with plenty of space. The location is excellent, just a five or ten minute walk from downtown (but not close enough that you get all the noise). And the staff are extremely polite, friendly, and helpful. In many ways, this is a magnificent throwback.

This incredible little gem of a hotel was hot before boutique hotels were even in vogue. It had everything you could want in a local hotel and more. We stayed here the first and last night of our trip as it was an easy ride to the airport. It is located within easy walking distance of several good restaurants - including their own in the hotel. Breakfast was filling and delicious. They have a great souvenir shop with prices that were very reasonable.

Room Tip: The family rooms - located at the end of the building - are two bedrooms with a bath and very comfor...
