Good location, very historical, clean, well decorated.Staff very friendly & helpful. We had no problems but,no sink stopper or light over sink.We would look forward to staying again. The hotel has a storage room where we left out gifts until our return,so it was less to carry all over the country. The hotel has a tour office for additional tours & pickups.Restaurant food was better than adverage. The coconut flan is the best! We tryed a local restaurant but liked the hotels much more.We liked the overall character & courtyard. The gift shop prices are reasonable.Computer keyboard has key symbols worn off so it is difficult to use. This is our third trip to,Costa Rica & would plan to stay at,Don Carlos, again.

the place was very rich in history and i would say that is all it has for it. It used to be a nice place to stay now it is very dirty and unsafe dont trust anyone there. my family and i have stay there two times. one time 3 years ago and another now. both times we got BED BUGS!! it was not fun at all. the only good thing that i would say about it is one of the guys was very help full. spend the more money to go some where better.

We really liked the hotel decoration, the friendly staff, the location, but unfortunately the room we stayed in smelled really bad (stuffy and moldy) and the bed was not comfortable at all...Maybe the mold is due to the fountains and water elements in the patio (we had room 5 on the ground floor).
I would still recommend the hotel, avoiding the rooms on the ground floor around the patio....

We stayed there just one night. The hotel is unique, the satff excellant and helpful, parking secure. Room we had was good, hot water , and had a safe. You can walk to the Central Ave , museums, etc. Remember where you are as there ar no street signs so you have to navaigate by the major building , colors, or "familiar" locations. People are friendly and helpful but it is good if you know a little Spanish. We'd stay there again.

I spent 5 nights at the don carlos and was more than satisfied. The hotel is centrally located but far enough away from the museums and shopping areas to be relaxing and quiet. Art abounds with tasteful statues, paintings and antiques throughout the hotel conveying a Costa Rican soulful atmosphere that I found charming and authentic. The staff is excellent and helpful in every way> There is an in-house travel agency that can book fantastic and reasonably priced excursions. The gift shop is excellent, The breakfast is included and also excellent as is the restaurant with reasonably priced food and a nice atmosphere.
The rooms are wonderful with wooden floors, tasteful furnishings and large bathrooms with excellent showers. The only "con" is that the beds (at least mine in room #5) are not as comfortable as they could be. They are not UNcomfortable but will be in a year or so and should be replaced with expensive orthopedic mattresses. This hotel is excellent on so many levels that if the beds had been a little newer it would rate 5 stars!

This is a hotel with a lot of culture and character. The rooms all differ, and my room was spacious with a giant wooden wardrobe, comfortable bed and couch, and nice bathroom. It was a lovely room and looked out over a courtyard area, not noisy at all. The hotel is in a location where you can easily walk to downtown if you like walking and through several parks on the way there. I stayed there for two nights with my husband and would easily recommend this hotel to anyone for an interesting place full of culture. The walls are filled with artwork, and there is a nice restaurant. The free breakfast is amazingly good, but the dinner was bland and "Americanized" so we only ate there once. You can eat inside or out on the terrace, which is nice in the morning. There is also a nice gift shop which is over-hyped but it's nice. I loved this hotel. Very clean, and has very friendly people.

This hotel is very charming, great location and the price is right. It's private and there's a beautiful courtyard in the back. Avoid the rooms in the stairwell, they are noisy and small. The staff was very accomodating and friendly. My first night there was disrupted by teenagers running in the stairwell and talking loudly until 3 am, then staff arrives at 5 am, and you hear EVERYTHING. After expressing my complaint in the morning and asking for a different room, the clerk graciously apologized and offered me a deluxe suite at the same price, and didn't charge me for the first night. I had stayed at this hotel in the past (NOT in the stairwell rooms), and will definitely return.
