“Great Place to Stay”
Reviewed 16 June 2012

We stayed here our first two nights on May 18th & 19th upon arrival in San Jose. It is old and very charming. The first room they put us in had only one bed and we required two. They graciously switched our room for us. It had a huge bathroom and was much larger than the first room. It was very clean and the beds were comfortable. They staff was very, very friendly and helpful. We left very early the next for La Paz Waterfall Park and they graciously had coffee ready for us on very nice tray while we waited for our guide. We ate dinner there which was very good. The breakfast which is included was very good and lots of food. Our room also had a very cozy patio with a table and two chairs. This hotel is centrally located to downtown San Jose and a good bargain. There is no elevator so be prepared for lots of steps and stairs.

Gardens are beautiful and quiet. Altought it is a small hotel, it has a lot of class and personality. Everyone who worked there was helpful friendly and polite. Their restaurant has a great ambience and the food was delicious. One night before I left the hotel I had a stomachache and so even though they do not offer room service, they brought me a cup of warm tea to my room. Since I traveled alone, another night I decided to venture to a San Jose bar, at my request, front desk checked on me and also called the taxi driver at 3am to make sure i was ok. Its all the small details that count.
If I ever go back to San Jose, I will definitely stay at Le Bergerac again.

Room Tip: My room had a balcony, It was spacious and quiet nice.

We spent three weeks on our honeymoon in Costa Rica and used Le Bergerac as our San Jose stop off on the night we flew in and on the night before we left. We didn't hire a car in Costa Rica and so used hotel transfers to get around and the hotel were incredibly helpful with arranging transfers to and from the airport and with Interbus for us both to get to our first hotel on the Caribbean coast and to get back from our final hotel on the Pacific Coast at the end. They also presented us with a huge plate of fruit upon arrival and congratulated us on our honeymoon. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was of a good standard and the small garden outside the restaurant gave us our first taste of being in the tropics which was fabulous.

It may have been because we were there in November which is still the last month of the wet season but, whilst the staff were friendly, it seemed a bit eerily quiet and whilst the rooms were clean and well kept they were not as smart as in some of the other places we stayed whilst in Costa Rica for a similar price. All-in-all having seen the exceptional reviews on Trip Advisor we were left a little underwhelmed but it was still a perfectly pleasant stay.

I'm not sure what more I can add to what others have already written in praise of this delightful small hotel east of downtown San Jose. We chose it because of it's proximity to Universidad Veritas where our son is studying and we have not been disappointed. We upgraded to the "Superior" room and ended up in Room 11, which is an upstairs room facing the street and the entrance with a lovely view of the mountains from the outside corner balcony. I was initially concerned about the possibility of street noise having read other review but it was not a problem. I enjoyed staying in the main part of the old house that is the central core of this cobbled-together property. The interior gardens have a very "New Orleans" feel to them. The beds were quite comfortable; the breakfast was excellent and the staff extremely helpful. We took advantage of their airport pickup service, their car rental service and their exit tax service which was well-worth the extra fee. I think the March 30, 2012 review by RAPLongueuil sums this property up pretty well. We would return to Le Berjerac again on a future trip to San Jose.

Room Tip: The "superior" rooms are worth the extra cost. Request one with a view of the gardens.

The Bergerac Hotel in San José is located in the quiet Los Yoses neighborhood of San José, some 20 blocks east of downtown right off Avenida Central. It looks like it might have been a large stately mansion earlier in the century. Many of the rooms are in the original building (each with a small balcony), as are the reception area and the restaurant (called the Cyrano). Other rooms are in a connected annex. The grounds are well landscaped with tropical plants and flowers. Limited free parking is available. All the of the rooms in the annex are large (as are the bathrooms) and each has a patio door leading to a small well-protected patio with a small table and two wrought-iron chairs. The (queen) beds are quite comfortable, the closets are more than adequate and each room comes with a safe as well as a flat-screen TV. There is no A/C but each room has a very efficient overhead fan. All floors are hardwood. The bathrooms are large and feature good showers with plenty of hot water. Service is friendly and efficient. Everyone speaks English. A (free) computer is available to guests wishing to surf the Internet. Breakfast is served in the Cyrano restaurant - with both indoor and outdoor seating and features a typical Costarican breakfast of juice, fruit, eggs (any style), rice and beans, toasts and coffee. Other choices are à la carte. Because of its location, the hotel is very peaceful and relaxing. There is a large modern grocery store a few blocks away on Avenida Central. As well, there are a number of restaurants nearby.Considering its location, the reasonable rates for the quality of this hotel, I give it a full "thumbs up".

Room Tip: I didn't get to see the rooms in the main building. If your room is in the annex, make sure it h...

We are currently in the midst of a two week stay at Le Bergerac. It is just a very nice, attractive, and well run establishment with excellent staff and impressive cleanliness. The gardens that surround the outdoor dining patio and line the private patios and upstairs walkway are lovely and carefully maintained. Food is good and service is friendly. Travel staff person Alejandra is superb. She set up Monteverde, Barosi Valley, and Poaz Volcano trips for us and is always willing to help if we have a question.

Restaurants abound in this University area. The hotel is in two lovely old houses about a half block off the Avenue Centrale.... but is fairly quiet due to the landscaping/trees. There is a good supermarket two blocks away and the San Pedro Mall is about a four block walk. The walk to central San Jose takes about 20 minutes. Room 14 is on second floor corner with walk in closet and two double beds, with a bonus view of the mountains. It can be a bit noisy in the am, if folks are going to the airport early.... not a problem for us. A second floor room was important to us, as it has less humidity to irritate my arthritis.

Hotel arranged airport pick up for us and then put those charges on our bill. This was incredibly convenient.

Room Tip: Rooms with patios are really nice. We preferred the second floor for lower humidity, though no lowe...
