Great stay, and actually my best stay in three trips to Costa Rica. The hotel is run like a PROFESSIONAL operation. Clean, well managed, and a friendly staff.
The entire facility is quite well maintained and very clean. The pool is a great attribute.
Rooms are quite adequate, clean, and have hot water in both the bath and kitchen sinks (NOT so common in Costa Rica! ...first hot water I've had in sinks in THREE trips! YAY!)
The kitchen is fine for simple dinners, and the hotels' daily b'fast is also the best buffet b'fast I've found in the country to date. Breakfast is typico Costa Rican, yet with enough variety to placate most Euro and American palates, and there's always fresh fruit/yogurt/cereal as well.
The neighborhood (Sabana Norte) is fine and you can walk over onto San Joses' main Paseo Colon boulevard in fifteen minutes. (Crossing RT 1 is a challenge unless you walk past the main entry to Park Sabana -across from the Paseo Colon and RT 1 intersection and use the overhead walkway) Cabs are cheap and plentiful.
Like anywhere in San Jose, (or Washington DC for that matter) it makes sense to be in soon after dark, or take a cab. Theft IS an issue here, just as in any city, but again, this hotel is in a MUCH better neighborhood then downtown SJ is. There are also tons of private security people in this area as the hotel is also next to a casino and another upscale hotel, as well as the headquarters for the national utility/electric company.
All in all, I'd send a friend/family member here without any personal reservation. In fact, I'd requested a quiet room and was pleased to find myself up on the fourth floor, well away from the pool area - where breakfast is also served starting at 6:30 AM - get it!?
Room 343 (4th FL) is perhaps the best combo. of quiet and sunlight in the hotel, and was just repainted as I was there. 342, that I had, would be just as good - except for the fact that it's right above the (very good) hotel's restaurant exhaust vent. ...rather alluring when they cook anything but FISH, and only two hotel rooms are so close to create any issue. (On the other hand, I had some great lasagna dreams... ; )
Sergio, the marketing and operations manager, is very savvy, totally competent and helpfully bi-lingual. ...and a good guy. For that matter, I'd be hard pressed to find an American operation where the whole staff was as cordial as the folks at Cristina were!
In short, a great value and stay! Not a five star hotel..., but at $70/night it's definately a gem in a country where 5 star isn't the norm.
