The diverse talents of Costa Rican artists, both past and present are on display. The gallery is relatively small, but well-maintained and is housed in the capitol's beautiful, original airport terminal circa 1930 at the northwestern edge of Sabana Park. Don't miss the upstairs carved wood historical diorama and the sculpture garden courtyard.

free and close to Aparhotel La Sabana (where we were staying); I particularly liked the outdoor sculpture garden of pieces that ranged from whimsical to powerful to thoughtful. Would have liked to see some photos of La Sabana as the original San Jose airport.

Mandatory stop if you wanna know about Costa Rican art. It's located in the flight control center of the old San Jose airport. The building it self it's a must see, but you will be amazed by the art inside of it, that's it's true value.

Who knew a former airport terminal would become such a charming setting for a museum.
Located at the East end of La Sabana park, obliquely opposite a 60's style diner called Soda Tapia.

After visiting other locations in CR, it is refreshing to see a property so well tended. the outdoor garden is littered with art pieces, and the inside has a number of rooms housing different styles of art that influenced the evolution of art in Costa Rica.

Some are obvious, but there are some areas that are quite surprising, like the Russian Room that features art forms from early soviet revolutionary days...a portrait of Lenin hangs there, as well as scenes of "the struggle".

Make sure you make your way up to the second floor to what was once the VIP lounge to see the incredible gilded mural that depicts the history of Costa Rica.

Entrance is free, however you will be asked to sign a visitors book. Closed Mondays.

PS...while you are there, walk out of the museum into the park to see the stands of rainbow eucalyptus trees that display trunks that look like they were colored with giant crayons

Small museum located in the ex airport of the ciry. FREE! Well organized, informative with a great finally ( the fantastic what used to be the vip lounge of the airport ). Impressive architecture, from the 40s. With a bonus sculpture garden.
