“Great Costa Rican market”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2014 via mobile

I was expecting something like the Straw Market in Nassau, but this clearly was not just built for tourists, and it was fun to get a feel for an authentic Costa Rican market. There were sodas, tons of vegetable, meat and other food stands, as well as souvenir stands. It was a really interesting mix. It's a fun place to look around and try to get a deal if you're looking for something.

“Huge Costa Rican marketplace”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2014 via mobile

Everything Costa Rican seems to be here: souvenirs, prepared food (cafés, aka sodas), cheese, meat, breads, crafts, fruits, and vegetables. Great sights, sounds, smells. We choose a typical lunch counter and had ceviche and albondogas soup and a local fresh fruit drink (tamarind). A walking street (no vehicles) runs the length of downtown and right in front of the market. With a total of 10 days in Costa Rica we can say that the prices were very good and some of the least we observed. A fun excursion, plan on spending an hour or more

“Fun and overwhelming”

Don't miss the locals and the hustle here. You could probably find anything you need here. Not a craft market or a high end shopping excursion, just useful and fun.

“Interesting experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 March 2014

This market is an interesting experience and a way to view local life. It's a typical market place like those that can be found in many Latin American countries. It has the typical souvenirs for the tourists as well as spices, meats, restaurants and house-hold goods for locals. The prices are okay, and you can try to haggle but sometimes it doesn't work that well (depending on the merchant). This market is only one block long (enclosed) so it's easy to figure out and not like some other markets I've been in where you could get lost -- literally. Most of the souvenir type stuff is in the outer corridor with the meats/restaurants are more towards the interior. This was definitely the place to go to try and find an authentic experience, but I'm not so sure the prices were "bargain basement" which is sometimes what you might expect at a local market.

“experience the culture”

The smell of fresh fruits and spices, the chance to interact with the locals, try the local food courts, will all enrich your experience of Costa Rica.
