Owner description: Galeria Namu is a fair trade art gallery for local and indigenous artists from Costa Rica and surrounding Central America countries. Established in 1998 at this same location, visitors to Costa Rica's capital city of San Jose can find us easily behind the Holiday Inn (across from Parque Morazan).Knowledge and passion for the artists and their work is what makes a visit to Galeria Namu special; the owner, Aisling, and her son Conall, along with their support staff love to share with visitors the background of the tribe or individual artisans and the remarkable collection of unique and very special pieces available for purchase. For the past 15 years, Galeria Namu has nurtured a relationship with the artists who create folk art, gold and jade replicas, handwoven baskets, originals paintings, tagua carvings and jewelry and much more. Visit the website for hours and a sampling of what you will encounter. Be prepared to catch their enthusiasm for fair trade with these local arts and crafts.

I discovered this gallery on my walking tour. The gallery is full of beautiful Costa Rican folk art and is a Fair Trade business. The baskets are not to be missed. Everyone speaks English well and they all were very welcoming. I bought a primitive painting and it was beautifully and carefully wrapped for travel, and will look forward to following this gallery on line.

Staff were friendly, expertly informative and not pushy. This compares favourably with the Galeria in Quito for us non-expert indigenous craft shoppers. Masks, carvings, prints and stunning woven baskets make it worth the detour even if you have no intention of buying.

I love being able to find authentic pieces of art at affordable prices...and Galeria Namu is just the place in Costa Rica. They have an amazing selection of pieces from artisans/tribes all over the country. The craftsmanship and artistic talents are incredible. I also think they are extremely fair in price for the quality received. They are conveniently located in San Jose and you should consider this your one stop shop for quality local wares. They also do a fantastic job of packaging it for you for checkin or carry on luggage so it won't get damaged.

We happened upon Galeria Namu by accident -- we were staying at Hotel Don Carlos (also highly recommended!) and were walking to the city center area, when we noticed this store and went in. And we were so happy that we did! First, the arts and crafts in this store are simply amazing. We'd looked at many other stores in other parts of the country, and this has a far better selection. Second, the prices are good -- and it's a fair trade store, which is an added benefit. Third, the person working at the store (the owner?) was exceptionally knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. We were there with our two teenage kids, both of whom had become fascinated by the various masks and other artifacts we'd seen in other stores. But here we were able to learn fascinating details about the people who made the masks, about their history, about the meaning of the different works of art, and so on. Thus, we got not only wonderful purchases and remembrances of our trip to Costa Rica, but also some fascinating background and information. This shop, all by itself, made us glad we spent the night in San Jose before flying home!

Your kind review is very rewarding! We really are dedicated to helping the families who visit us understand Costa Rica at a more 'ethno' level and it is even more rewarding when young people, like your sons, show enthusiastic appreciation for the richness of the tribal diversity of Costa Rica. Keep in touch and perhaps on your next visit we can help your family enjoy the great experience of visiting a tribal village.
