Owner description: Galeria Namu is a fair trade art gallery for local and indigenous artists from Costa Rica and surrounding Central America countries. Established in 1998 at this same location, visitors to Costa Rica's capital city of San Jose can find us easily behind the Holiday Inn (across from Parque Morazan).Knowledge and passion for the artists and their work is what makes a visit to Galeria Namu special; the owner, Aisling, and her son Conall, along with their support staff love to share with visitors the background of the tribe or individual artisans and the remarkable collection of unique and very special pieces available for purchase. For the past 15 years, Galeria Namu has nurtured a relationship with the artists who create folk art, gold and jade replicas, handwoven baskets, originals paintings, tagua carvings and jewelry and much more. Visit the website for hours and a sampling of what you will encounter. Be prepared to catch their enthusiasm for fair trade with these local arts and crafts.

Found this gallery in San Jose with Moon Travel Guide. What a great place! The staff was knowledgeable about the offerings and included printed material about the tribes which made the items as well as detailed descriptions about the processes. Prices are extremely reasonable. We bought a gorgeous mask, pre-Colombian replica statue, hand woven placemats and a handbag. And of course love that it is fair trade. The staff wrapped everything for travel with bubble wrap and paper. Best store for arts and crafts we saw in CR.

Last Thursday, we had an opportunity to visit Galeria Namu, located in San Jose, CR, which had been written up in the Lonely Planet Guidebook. What a great place - full of incredible art work and folk art from indigenous tribes in Costa Rica and Panama. They have so many beautiful things, it's hard to settle on what you like the most. We picked a beautifully carved jicara that is truly amazing, a wonderful mola from Panama, and a tagua (ivory nut) intricately carved into hovering hummingbirds. Everything was very well packed and was in perfect condition when we arrived home. The best part is that you are given information on everything you buy, explaining what it is, where it comes from, and how it is made. We only wished we had more time to spend there. It is well worth a stop. One other comment - their website is very easy to navigate should you decide you would like to order anything else you may have seen.

I discovered this gallery on my walking tour. The gallery is full of beautiful Costa Rican folk art and is a Fair Trade business. The baskets are not to be missed. Everyone speaks English well and they all were very welcoming. I bought a primitive painting and it was beautifully and carefully wrapped for travel, and will look forward to following this gallery on line.

Staff were friendly, expertly informative and not pushy. This compares favourably with the Galeria in Quito for us non-expert indigenous craft shoppers. Masks, carvings, prints and stunning woven baskets make it worth the detour even if you have no intention of buying.
