“Four-star stay on a two-star budget”

Wonderful room for a great price. Excellent service from the very helpful bilingual girl at the front desk. Convenient to the main bus stations. Never felt unsafe, but it's in a more industrial part of town. Best for a short stay while doing tours to the surrounding area. Breakfasts in the restaurant upstairs were 'tipico' but groups can easily overwhelm the staff. Avoid the groups for the best time.

Room Tip: Go for a room on an upper floor facing the front for the best view.

We walked in the hotel and was greeted by a nice, friendly, helpful woman at the check-in desk. However, we receieved our room keys and walked upstairs to our room and it smelled so bad!!! It was a musty, dirty smell that we could not deal with so we checked out the same day. The room is small and really basic and bare. (If you are stopping in San Jose for 1 or 2 nights, maybe but not for an entire week!!!) It is in a really suspect neighborhood; however, San Jose doesnt feel too safe altogether.. Police officers patrol downtown so you may want to book a hotel closer to the pedestrian walk. When I opened the door to the bathroom, it smelled even worse!! This is your warning...book at your own risk!!

Room Tip: Beware...it smells!!!

Good enough for a short stay. As the name says, you are in a cocoon- cool, comfortable enough with basic amenities. Room reasonably clean. Just think there should be at least one window you can open for natural ventilation, since there is no air condition but an overhead fan. Breakfast was satisfactory - the black beans and rice added a different "twist". The Wifi access is frustrating -only available in the lobby and even so, not always connecting properly.

In terms of the staff at the front desk and in the breakfast room, they are courteous and have a professional attitude. Thank you all for your hospitality.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the roadway.

Stayed 2 nights here on last part of vacation.... I was looking for something close to central San Jose' but at a better price. The room was downstairs next to the office.. there was no air conditioning, only a ceiling fan. The room was large enough with a spacious bathroom. There was a musty smell in the bathroom and there was no soap dish in the shower. I left the bar of soap on the floor. The land-line phone was missing.. I reported this to the young lady at the front desk.... she offered me another room or use of front desk phone. I chose the latter. Customer service was good overall.. The evening clerk helped me book a day tour. When I was ready to leave, I turned in the key to the sleepy overnight clerk.. I asked for a receipt and he said he didn't know how to give me one. This was my experience at Cocoon Hotel in San Jose' Cost Rica... bottom line, okay for the price..

We got in late to San Jose and needed a place at the last minute. Cocoon looked great online, so we grabbed a room. When we got there, the lobby seemed decent and the staff were very nice, accommodating, and friendly, but when we got to our room, our bed had been slept in and not remade. Simple mistake, but still. They sent someone up promptly to make it, but we were tired and cranky from a long day of stressful travel and had been hoping to not have to deal with housekeeping as soon as we arrived. Also, the tiny, cramped room smelled like the bathroom - bed was about 6 feet from the toilet. I asked the cleaner if they could do something about it and they pulled out an aerosol "room freshener" odor eliminator and sprayed it around the bedroom and bathroom. ICK!!! Spraying odor eliminators is not a substitute for cleaning! There was very little ventilation except for AC which was really loud, so it was not a restful night's sleep and we were both in a very bad mood by morning. The bed was one of those "modern" platform beds and I hit my shins on it about 5 times trying to get around it to get into the bathroom. Expletives followed. The bedside lamp didn't work and all in all it felt a bit shabby. It's a modern concept hotel wannabe that is not quite hitting the mark. Nice try, but needs some refining. Anyway, it is a place to stay if you're in a pinch.

On the upside...the morning breakfast buffet was pretty decent.

Some easy improvement tips for the Management: Get rid of the cheap "modern" bedframes and just put the mattresses on simple frames to give more space in the room and less hazard for shin-bruising. Clean the bathrooms with better quality products that don't smell like chemicals. Check that rooms are in good shape before renting them out and make sure that everything works.

Room Tip: Get a room with a window with a view if you can. If you're planning in advance, ask for their be...

I chose the hotel because of its proximity to Caribe bus terminal...about a 5 minute walk from there...they allowed us to check in early (11am) which made things way more convenient for us...the room is pretty basic...not as nice as the pictures...but not dirty or anything either...it is a bit murky...free breakfast spread was pretty average but it was nice to have...it's about 5-10 min walk to central part of town, so the location is pretty good even though the surrounding area didn't look like the friendliest of neighborhoods...if you have a day layover in SJ, it's an adequate place to stay...

We booked this "hotel" on the recommendations of travellers submitted reports and photos published on TA. Sadly for us we forgot to read between the lines of all reports and did not notice the warning signs and were lured by attractive prices and photos.

As a quick summary we can only say that if you do not belong to the backpacker genus STAY AWAY.
Still keen to go please read on. Our arrival was relatively un-eventful apart from an unusual high number of prostitutes lurking around the immediate vicinity of the hotel and within 1 minute we watched 2 drug deals being completed and a pickpocket being pointed out by our taxi driver. You will be on the fringe of the red light district of San Jose and surrounded by dilapidated houses. No suitable restaurants or attractions anywhere.

On arrival you are greeted by a security guard which doubles as bar tender and porter. The friendly front desk girl checks you in and demands all monies paid upfront. This process involves making a copy of your passport which she forgot to return to us. You can imagine our panic when we realised this and on our immediate enquiry the passport was found amongst the paper rubbish under the front desk. Still not convinced to look for another hotel? Please read on.

We were handed our keys to room 205 and we went up one floor through the nice enough corridor. On opening the door we were immediately overwhelmed by a musky and foul smell coming from a room not bigger than chicken coop and no window to let in sunlight, just a light well with an attractive outlook onto a white concrete wall less than 1 metre away.

The furniture, I am sure was bought at a bargain auction, consists of a very low and small double bed with minuscule pillows. The bed cover was filthy, stained and obviously "pre used". After inspecting the en suite which had the charm of a laundry constructed in the 1920s we traced the foul smell to one corner below the window. Still want more, please read on.

We had booked this "hotel" for our entire stay of 7 days in Costa Rica. So, having just arrived from El Salvador I needed a stiff drink and a meal in a nearby restaurant. The "bar" in the hotel was "dry" (I must talk to my manager about this) and we were given a list of suitable restaurants in the downtown area safe for us to get to by taxi. Unfortunately the most highly recommended restaurant was closed and our taxi driver took us to a great restaurant of his own choosing.

To cut our losses we decided to leave this "hotel" and relocate the next day after having our breakfast which was the best thing at this dreadful establishment. We are still waiting for a partial refund of our monies as the hotel did NOT provided wifi in our room as promised and advertised. If you a security conscious don't worry, you cannot deadlock your room from inside.

If this "hotel" ever has the misfortune to catch fire don't worry, you will run to the fire exit and will find is locked and barricaded from outside. Please do me and yourself a favour and look for a different hotel to enjoy you stay in Costa Rica
