“One of the few places for tourists”
Reviewed 15 May 2014

San Jose does not have many places to shop for gifts for those back at home. This is not a nation known for crafts, but at least this market is one place where one may expect to find "made in Costa Rica" products. Do plan on negotiating the price and do not be afraid to walk away. If one vendor does not meet your price there will be another a bit further on who will.

“Not what I expected.”
Reviewed 28 February 2014

Reading all the good reviews in TA, I was expecting something more authentic. The market is small, full of small things for presents, in good prices, but I am sorry, most of them are coming from China. It is, IMO, a touristy place, you can find some nice things to take back, but dont lie to yourself, most of them arent Costarican.

“Great for purchasing Costa Rican crafts, pottery, masks and exotic wood bowls!”
Reviewed 8 December 2013

The Mercado de Artesania is located next door to the National Museum. This is a wonderful market for finding Boruca masks, Chorotega pottery, handmade jewelry, exotic wooden bowls and placemats, hand painted feathers; hand woven bags, backpacks, wallets, purses, belts, table runners. Dozens of vendors and great prices. Many vendors speak English and take credit cards. The new Jade Museum is underconstruction adjacent to this market.
