We went on the Aerial Tram with a guide and a tour of the butterfly and frog garden. We really enjoyed the guided tour and the view. The tram ride was quite long and has a cover to aid with sunlight/ rain. I highly recommend having a guide , as they not only educate they also see some things that you would otherwise miss .For example ,we enjoyed a rare sighting of a Tapir, unfortunately, my photo is only of the ‘hind’ end, of this large mammal, before entering the nearby brush. The butterfly garden and frog gardens are very small, although we enjoyed the personal time with the butterflies. The guide showed us the life cycles of the butterfly and we saw one coming out of the cocoon. The park has both Primary and Secondary rainforests. As with all of the parks, it is best to go very early in the morning for seeing wildlife. I recommend visiting Bureilla Carrillo National Park and the beautiful gift shop!

Worth a day trip to take a look around and see what there is to see. There are some interesting things there.

My wife and I hiked the two trails from the ranger station, a 1.6 km and a 1.0 km trail. It took us a couple hours. This area is very remote, so there is some good wildlife to be seen here. Unfortunately the ranger did not speak any English but he was a nice guy, gave us brochures, charged us $8 apiece and sent us on our way. He also showed us a bunch or orb weaver spiders that are all over the station buildings, like dozens!

The trails are probably considered moderate hiking, definitely not wheelchair accessible. It felt good to be out in the rainforest and not close to any city or town. On our hike we saw a 2 foot lizard, a collared peccary, several birds including orioles and warblers, numerous moths and butterflies, and a mantled howler monkey, my wife's favorite. I was actually expecting to see more wildlife, but was happy nonetheless. Go here to get away from the hustle and bustle of the San Jose city area.

We saw amazing leafcutter ants working very hard to carry parts of leaves to their nest. The guide before the tram ride was very knowledgeable and explained the difference between roots and vines etc. etc. This tram ride is super hi-tech. On each tram (which they "weight" appropriately according to body mass), was so quiet, and you glided through the rain forest with the only sound of cicadas. In each tram there is a guide who explains what you are seeing. Appropriately, it rained in the rain forest while we were there!! They also have a tram on the Pacific side, equally impresssive.

Good little hike from Ranger Station. Unfortunately A LOT of garbage along the road (Rt 32) that goes through the park.
