“Kurt and his staff are the BEST”

One would expect to pay a lot more for the accommodations offered at Casa 69. The rooms are clean, nicely decorated and very comfortable...all with updated baths, mini-bars, cable television, wireless internet, and a large safe (big enough to hold your laptop). Kurt has invested wisely to make sure that everyone enjoys their experience. Casa 69 is conveniently located and the best option when you need a SAFE place to stay in downtown San Jose.

A friend and I stayed at Casa 69 for 2 nights on our way in and out of Costa Rica. We were in the main house, downstairs, with 2 queen beds. One word describes Casa 69 - CHARMING! The house is so charming with tons of character but modern amenities and furnishings.

Room: The sheets were so soft and the room was very clean. The bathroom was spacious and the shower was delightful with great water pressure. The room also had a tv (with english speaking channels), a fridge with beverages, and a safe.

Main House: The rest of the house is so comfy. The courtyard was by far my favorite and made you forget you were in the middle of a city. The breakfast is very tasty (bread and jam is incredible) and the coffee is to die for. In fact, my friend and I purchased some to bring home - it was that good.

Staff: I cannot say enough about Kurt and his staff. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. Kurt is the most wonderful host and makes you feel like you are staying with an old friend. He was very helpful and a wealth of knowledge for the San Jose area - what to do, where to eat, and so on. And let's not forget about Tina...Tina is the B&B mascot of sorts. She is such a sweet dog, who enjoys a good rub and will howl when you stop. Too cute!

Overall this B&B is AMAZING! It definitely felt like a home away from home and when I come back to San Jose you can bet I am staying here.

Kurt and Staff - You have a wonderful place and thank you so much for making us feel so welcome. We had a fantastic time and can't wait to return one day. We wish you all continued success!

My experience at Casa 69 was as pain-free as it gets. First of all, when I made my reservation, the owner, Kurt, sent me an e-mail with detailed directions from the airport to Casa 69 in Spanish for me to print out and give to the taxi driver. I thought this was a superb idea which turned out to work just fine.
My room was impeccable and large. The bathroom was also very clean, although some users might find it a little bit small. The shower was excellent! Remember to leave your used towels on the floor.
Kurt was the best host you can find. I have stayed in $200-$300-a-night hotels, and I can say the attention at Casa 69 has been the best!! Kurt in completely fluent in English, German, and Spanish, so travelers will find it very easy to communicate with him. The staff at Casa 69 are very friendly and will make every effort to accommodate their guests.
The lobby in gorgeous, and serves as a relaxing place where you can plan your day in San Jose. There is free WiFi on the main house only, so you if your are on the other house you will have to go to the lobby to connect to the WiFi (bring your laptop).
A breakfast consisting of coffee, fresh bread, fruits, and natural fruit juice is included. They will prepare more substantial breakfast if you want, but you would have to pay a modest price.
A very important note is that they accept cash only at Casa 69, so be sure to have that in mind before you check out.
Overall, I would highly recommend Casa 69 to anyone visiting San Jose. The next time I return to the city, I will not even consider staying anywhere else.

Very clean spacious rooms with all the amenities you need. Beautiful garden and a very fresh breakfast, the juice was awesome! One minus, it is situated right beside a rail line... not much you can do about that as all of downtown San Jose is pretty noisey.

We took the room w/ 2 queen size beds. It's tucked away in the far end of the house and upstairs from everyone. The room is super spacious and so modern and clean.
I liked the layout as the two beds are not side-by-side to each other, rather diagonal from one another affording us a bit of space. There's also ample room for a little sitting area with a small rattan couch, coffee table, and 2 cushioned side chairs. There's also a terrace w/ a cafe table in front of the door for some covered outdoor space.

After having spent a week in the backpacker town of Montezuma, this place was like paradise --- big bed with nice sheets, modern original art on the walls, HOT WATER in a giant shower. Que RICO! and the rate was only $70/nite total, a real bargain.

The whole place is cute - from the main house to the the house across the street where most of the rooms are located. Bright yellow and well landscaped, It felt like a hidden gem.

I'd totally come back and stay here longer - our stay was too short. We used it as a place to rest our heads before our super early flight back to the States at 630am. It's in the far Eastern end of town from the airport so you have to cut through the city to reach the airport but at that early hour in the morning it took us less than 20 minutes to get to the airport from Casa 69.

I'd also recommend dinner at Trocadero, within 2-3 blocks walk from Casa 69 for dinner and drinks. It's a sophisticated restau/bar/lounge catering to San Jose Tico Yuppies and the like. Great original artwork, and a very friendly, engaged owner in the mix. GREAT FOOD too! I had a big steak delmonico of locally raised beef for $10 and it was perfect. My friend had a sea bass stuffed w/ big lump crab and it was AMAZING.
I believe it's address is Calle 21 and Avenida 2.

The only thing I can add to all the good reviews of Casa 69 is we found it the friendliest b&b we've ever stayed in. We were there for two days in Feb and there was a terriffic group of people staying there. I've never been in a place where everyone was chatting to everyone at breakfast. The hotel staff were also very helpful and friendly.
We had a terriffic time...what a treat!

After reading the positive reviews, my husband and I chose Casa 69 for our stay in San Jose based on location, price and service. We stayed two nights before joining an Elderhostel birding program that took us around the country, staying at well-known ecolodges; then we returned to Casa 69 for three nights at the end of our trip. This very affordable B&B turned out to be better than anything we expected--modern, comfortable and clean facility, efficent service, and very friendly owners. We were eager to return at the end of our Elderhostel trip for a good rest and to see more of San Jose before we left the country. We will stay here again when we return to Costa Rica.

I wanted to submit a review, because some of those posted seem to imply that the place would appeal to a younger crowd. We are seasoned world travellers, now retired and watching the budget, who have had the chance to stay in world class hotels as well as humble rooms. This place is a gem. The on-line reservation process worked very smoothly. Kurt sent very clear directions to hand to a taxi driver at the airport, which made our arrival also smooth. Even though we arrived late (11:30 pm) from the airport, we were met by a courteous Jenns, who later told us that they take turns staying up late for airport arrivals and getting up early for departures. The room was comfortable--queen sized bed, Kandinski prints on the wall, TV (including CNN), desk, bedside lamps, a safe for valuables, reasonably-priced minibar, and modern bathroom with large shower stall. I had read that some hotels and B&Bs in CR have very thin walls and this proved true at several of the ecolodges we visited; however, this was not a problem at Casa 69. We slept well every night we were there--less traffic noise than closer to downtown and no noise from fellow guests, even though we shared an open courtyard. (One review mentioned a train that runs all day--this isn't true, nor an accurate observation. The train is a small electric train that runs during rush hour--no rumbling or clattering, but sometime between 6 am and 6:30 am it does start to sound its horn when it crosses intersections. It does not sound all day long. Although we were aware of it each morning, it certainly wasn't a problem.)

Breakfast in the covered courtyard was a selection of tropical sliced fruit, a juice that was a delicious mixture of fruit, a basket of fresh bread, two delicious jams, and an endless supply of Costa Rican coffee and milk served by a very friendly staff and prepared in a spotless, recently remodeled kitchen. For a reasonable price, we added the cold cut/cheese plate one morning. We could also have opted for eggs, pancakes, and some other selections. The outside of the B&B and the courtyard are painted a bright yellow, and so our memories of the place seem very sunny.

The hotel is a short walking distance to the National Museum and Jade Museum, and not very much further to the pedestrian shopping area downtown and the National Theater and Gold Museum. The area around the hotel has several colleges with evening classes, so there was a lot of foot traffic after dark. We felt comfortable and safe walking to nearby restaurants for dinner. Kurt and Jenns gave us some great restaurant recommendations; our only disappointment was the evening we walked around and chose our own restaurant. They will also advise guests about getting around town, taking tours out of town, etc. They spend a lot of time interacting with their guests, and the guests spend a lot of time interacting with Tina, a very well behaved dog who enjoys the attention. We were able to store our luggage for several hours after we checked out the first time, but still wanted to see some things in town. A telephone for local calls is available for guests in the breakfast area, which made it easy to reconfirm our flight home.

The morning we left, Jenns had ordered a taxi for shortly after 6 a.m. for us, got up early to serve us a cup of coffee, helped carry our bags out, and gave us a farewell hug. We will stay here again.
