“Great Food”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

The Machu Picchu was very low key and even blue-collar, but the food was great and very reasonably priced. The fish soup was some of the best I've had, and the ceviche was also very good. Watch our for the Peruvian hot sauce, though (it was on the side).

“Definitely not five stars”
Reviewed 12 June 2014 via mobile

We went to this restaurant on the back of several excellent reviews. One said it was not to be missed. We are at a loss as to why.

The seafood ceviche was, to be fair, very nice. The fried calamari was mediocre at best. Lastly, we ordered an unusual sounding dish of prawns stuffed in avocado with parmesan. There was certainly no parmesan; what arrived was prawns drowning in a pool of bright orange cheese sauce with pieces of avocado lining the dish. It was not good.

We ordered two seabass mains. The fish did not taste of bass. The first bass dish was cooked in a watery tomato sauce with a whole onion, which was marginally more cooked than raw. The second was bathed in overly salty oyster sauce, frankly disgusting. The last main was supposedly octupus cooked with garlic in olive oil. I tasted neither garlic nor olive oil, but it was pleasant enough.

Service and ambience was very nice.

There is no denying the reviews of this place are good, however we are left bewildered how this came to be. Perhaps the Americans enjoy this type of cooking. It was frankly too much for the European palate.

“Great Peruvian food!”
Reviewed 22 May 2014 via mobile

If you only have the chance for one restaurant in San Jose, Machu Pichu is your choice. The place is typical, menu is great and inexpensive and food is simply awesome. Try Chaufa de Mariscos (Seafood Peruvian rice), corvina macho, and ceviche. Make a room for Suspiro Limeño, a typical Peruvian dessert, with few drops of Pisco, traditional Peruvian spiritual drink. Recommended.....

“Nice place... try the squid!”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

We found this place on Trip Advisor and took a cab from our Hotel in the Park Sabana area. Very friendly staff. The menu has all the usual suspects for Peruvian cooking... but the grilled octopus skewers were the best I've ever tasted. My dining companions had the Sea Bass and the Shredded Chicken in garlic sauce. I had ceviche and the octopus. We also shared the potatoes with shrimp... something I've never seen in Peru. All was good... and they brought out seasonings so we could add to our taste. American prices... there are no deals in Costa Rica. The neighborhood was OK... and we had no problems with getting a cab back to our hotel.
