Atiu Villas
Reviewed 4 February 2012

My partner and I stayed here for two nights (way too short in hindsight) as part of our Cooks Islands holiday. It was splendid. The villas are very very spacious, the beds are comfortable and a double bed is a real double bed not zipped together singles. Each villa has a veranda with a picnic table and two comfy chairs; excellent to enjoy a glass of wine at night after a satisfying day.

When you think Rarotonga or Aitutaki have little shops, Atiu has not even a handful of stores and hardly any restaurants (often the few that are there are not open all the time) so you are pretty much dependent on your villa and....your hosts! Kura's Kitchen eliminates any need to even think about cooking dinner. For NZ$30pp you can join Roger for a 2-course meal and that does not only provide you with excellent food, you also get to know the other guests and can ask Roger anything you like about Atiu. Drinks are extra but at NZ$20/bottle for very good wine that is not an issue, especially not bearing in mind the wine is shipped into Rarotonga where it is put on smaller ships to supply the outer islands (Atiu receives a ship every 5 weeks! but nevertheless Roger offered us a choice of 4 red wines!). We enjoyed every second of our stay.

If you like doing your own thing for dinner, not to worry; the fridge and cupboards in the kitchen of your villa are fully stocked with all you need at prices the same as the general store. No mini-bar rip off prices, just honest provision of what you may need. We cooked our own breakfast (even the eggs were provided) and enjoyed it on the veranda.

Roger was very generous in sharing his knowledge of Atiu with us and straight after he picked us up from the airport he showed us various sites and told us the history of Atiu. What a great start to our stay!

We did a tour with Birdman George and recommended it (kindly arranged by Roger for us) and did the walk to the Cave with swimhole and native bird. Both were brilliant.

Nothing seems too much trouble at Atiu Villas; there are scooters to rent and even a 4WD Jeep. We paid NZ$55/day (inc fuel which is well over NZ$2/litre on the islands) which was well below the NZ$70/day (exc fuel) we paid on Aitutaki for a little Nissan Micra that was about to fall apart.

It was just brilliant! Don't think about it just contact Roger (check for the Atiu Villas website and contact them directly to avoid the travel agent taking a share) and book.

Room Tip: We stayed in Villa 6 which has most privacy but all villas have a lot of privacy. When we stayed he...

Been there for 5 days.

It's simple: On Atiu go to Atiu Villas. You'll get a host (Roger) that cares about you - sometimes more than you wish when he wants you to take some more drinks. He also has got a very unique sense of humor. He'll tell you stories about Atiu and his people and you'll have to think twiche about if tha's the truth or not. You'll love Roger for sure :-)

To all those allergy sufferers: My wife doesn't eat seafood and is allergic to hazelnuts: no problem for Kura's kitchen. They respected that and still cooked delicious meals!

Room Tip: bird lovers: take villa #5 and you'll have good chance to see some frutas flying to a special bu...

We stayed at The Atiu Villas for two nights in September. First things first - if you are going to The Cook Islands and are looking for something a bit different, hop on the ten seater from Rarotonga and get ye to Atiu!

We totally loved the island, and even writing this I am regretting the fact that we only had two nights there.

The villas are charming in an old fashioned way, but roomy, clean and comfortable, with everything you could need - including wifi! There is a nice pool and beautiful tropical gardens to chill out in. You can also hire bikes and scooters on site which is great as you can pootle around the island at your own pace.

Our hosts, Roger and Kura made everyone very welcome and became part of the Atiu experience. Roger met us at the airport and took us on a brief island tour while we sat on plastic garden chairs in the back of his pick-up truck. Kura manages Kura's Kitchen at the Villas which provides excellent and wholesome island food for villa guests as well as outsiders - I don't think there's another proper restaurant on the island.

So, go to Atiu and go to Atiu villas!

Our 4 nights at Atiu Villas was a highlight of our 2 week vacation in the Cook Islands. The accommodation is excellent and the island is a step back in time - no resorts, no souvenir shops, no restaurants or bars ( except Kura's Kitchen at the Villas).
We think we have seen the REAL Cook Islands here. Not as stunningly beautiful as Aitutaki, but very interesting, relaxing and a great place to have a beach to yourself.
Roger organised an island tour with Birdman George, a cave tour with Marshall, reef fishing with Andrew and a coffee tour with Mata - all great experiences.
The island night at Kura's kitchen was fabulous, with an excellent performance by the local villagers and delicious buffet dinner. We attended an island night at a resort on Aitutaki which was twice the price and half as entertaining.
We are privileged to have had the opportunity to visit Atiu while it is still an unspoilt island paradise.

We very much enjoyed our 2 night stay here and would loved to have stayed longer. The Villas are made out of local timbers and are quite lovely. There is a pool, a tennis court and a dining area where you can get a 2 course set meal for $30 = we found this was a good way to meet other travellers as the table was communal.
Each villa also has a grocery stock and you simply pay for what you use at very good rates. We did not get to meet Kura but her husband Roger hosted us and is very knowledgeable about the island. We would reccomend this island as a destination - and to top it off we even saw whales swimming and playing on the edge of the reef

Room Tip: all the rooms are good

Atiu villas are the place to stay in Atiu. I only had a couple of nights, which I wish had been four or five, but it was well worth the time. If you need five star pampering then Atiu is probably not the place for you, but if you want a little taste of the South Pacific then it definitely is the place. Population 482 plus the 11 tourists. My host Roger is an incredibly smart man who despite his life “away from the world” is totally in touch with current events. Kura’s cooking is spectacular and the company is all anyone could ask for. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean. Absolutely take the “Anatakitaki cave tour”. It is as advertised, “a challenging nature walk” but an experience not to be missed. The guide Marshall Humphrey is entertaining, informative, and careful. After the cave tour we went to a Tumunu, or “bush beer drinking session.” Talking with the locals over ten or so shots of 14% alcohol beer was good fun. I have been a lot of places, done a lot of things, but this was a special day for me. The other special time is a tour with “Birdman George”. He is wonderfully friendly and informative. Explaining the birds, trees, plants, medicinal herbs, history and all of Atiu. This was the first time I have had “new coconuts, after husking them they are white, not dark brown and so soft that you can cut, not crack them and scrape out the meat with your finger, not a knife. If you even think maybe, then do it for sure and leave Rarotonga behind without regret.

This is a great little resort on a beautiful Island. Roger and Kura have got everything right. It's a good layout and the gardens are well established. With 6 villa's, a restaurant, swimming pool and a grass tennis court... it's all you need. The best feature about resorts this size is the community feel. You socialise with every guest who is staying, but still have your own space. Between walks, swimming, tours and playing tennis, our family (2 kids under 10) was well catered for.

We stayed in a standard 'are' (villa) with one of the kids sleeping in the loft. It was ample size and very comfortable. The pool is great, although not necessarily ideally orientated for lying around in loungers in the sun.

We did as many tours as we could. They were all brilliant and should be a must. The pace and quietness of Atiu is so appealing you can only unwind and relax, even while on the tours.

This visit was the highlight of our holiday. We stayed 4 nights and see that as a minimum you'd want to allow. The restaurant is only open at night, so if you are a fussy eater or have allergies, you might want to bring your own food just in case the store or your stocked room pantry doesn't cater for what you need.
