Amuri Sands, Aitutaki
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 6 January 2010

myself and my partner stayed here 13th - 16th December 2009 and have to reitterate what other guests have said already, this place (Aitutaki) is stunningly beautiful and Amuri Sands perfectly compliments it with its unique deserted on a desert island feel.
the beach and indeed the lagoon feels like its all your own as it is quiet and truly like a picture postcard.
Mark the owner is a very attentive and informative man who is willing to go the extra mile to ensure you have a comfortable stay.
The only downside to staying here in Aitutaki is that you eventually have to leave :-(

If you are going to go to Aitutaki and you're on a budget I would %100 recommend Amuri Sands.

Mark greeted my friends and I at the airport and let us keep our bags in his little office while the guest, who we still there, checked out and he was able to clean our rooms (we got in at 9am). He called the scooter rental place for us. They picked us up. When we had our scooters (and a wonderful breakfast and a little cafe around the corner) we returned to our cleaned rooms. Mark doesnt live on the grounds but came by every morning and afternoon to clean up the grounds. We had the whole place to ourselves. It was wonderful.

The rooms were clean. They had everything you could need or want (with the exception of a microwave) to cook. The beds were very comfy. The view was spectacular and the water wonderful. The bathroom was a good size and the water pressure in the shower was lovely.

If you go to Aitutaki I would recommend you bring water shoes or flippers and your own snorkling gear. If you can, I would also recommend bring as much of your own food as possible as the grocery selection on the island is not great. I would still go back in heart beat (even though i would have to fly to Rarotanga which I strongly disliked)

We stayed here for a week in April. The location is absolutely superb - right on a great beach - it is the same stretch of beach as number of the resorts, including Etu Moana literally right next door. The host was friendly and helpful. Excellent value for money for the very private beachfront location. Rooms were clean and tidy, kitchen very well equipped. There is a great takeaways also a short walk away. Also recommend going to buy fruit from Tuono's also a short walk away. We went to Island Night at Pacific Resort - the food was superb. If you are staying for any length of time, recommend hiring transport. We hired a car because we have a young child, but traffic is so easy-going that scooters would be fine, even for those nervous of them.

There are two units in the one building, but this is OK as there are no common walls, so you cant hear your neighbors. The pigs and chooks from the next property, now that's another story altogether!
Well set up for self contained accommodation, but let down by the lack of places to buy food. The best place that we found was the "Heineken shop" It has a Heineken sign out the front.
Comfortable bed and about 50 m from Etu Moana.
Nice swimming in the lagoon, note there is a dredged channel about 100m away on your right which has deep water close to the beach.
Again things are scattered around the island so you will require some form of transport.
Food is an issue as the shops have limited options ( steak only comes frozen with the smallest amount being 6 chops ) and restaurants just close for a few days on a whim.
For those on a budget Island Hopper vacations do two night packages for about the price of the flight alone.

Stayed for a week recently at Amuri Sands in Aitutaki. This was part of a longer trip including Atiu and Rarotonga. Amuri Sands was great, they have two private chalets on the beach on the west of the island. When we were there it was just us. Couldn't help feeling smug compared to other accommodation options with much more chalets on their beaches. Noone for us to share the beach with. The snorkelling out front was great, clams, so many fish and so many colours. The chalets are roomy for a couple, with a good sized deck for enjoying the views and the sunsets with a cold one. Inside there is a fully equipped kitchen, seperate bathroom with hot shower and good pressure, not that much of the time is spent inside with the fantastic outdoors.

Right from landing the service was great. Mark ,the owner picked us up and then ran us to the grocery shop (Heiniken shop?) for groceries. He does not live on site but is around for most of the day and is super helpful and knowledgable about Aitutaki.

As for activities on Aitutaki we did a lagoon cruise with Teking. Fantastic day out, takes a small group out. The tour involves snorkelling in 3 stops, visiting 4 of the the motu (uninhabeted desert islands), and a massive bbq lunch in the shallows off one of the motu with fish between your feet. Also went diving with Onu at Bubbles Below. Great outfit, friendly and funny. Safety is paramount. We went out in a group of 6. Saw giant turtles, an abundance of fishlife, visibility was 40m. Incredible.

Amuri Sands was a great find, the unit I stayed in was very comfortable, and located directly on the beach in gorgeous Aitutaki. There was a verandah at the back where I would sit and watch beautiful sunsets across the lagoon. I went snorkelling in the shallow, warm lagoon most days and saw a fantastic array of fish, just a few metres from the beach outside the unit.

There was lots of privacy as the unit is only one of two and set back from the road under the cool shade of palm trees. It was my first time in the Cook Islands and I found the hosts to be really helpful in booking excursions and giving me tips on what to do. All round, Amuri Sands is really good value for money and the stunning Cook Islands will remain as one of the most memorable holidays I have been on. Great people, delicious fresh food and a picture postcard location! It was fantastic.
