“Great Lunch”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

We recently spent a week on Aitutaki, and were encouraged to try Tauono's. Everything was delicious, and the service was great. We had an opportunity to meet Sonja, who was extremely charming. We also purchased her book, "Sonja's Kitchen". The cookbook has many of Sonja's great island recipes, as well as information about local fruits and vegetables used in her recipes. It also has information regarding Cook Island history and culture. The bottom line is it's a nice place to visit, and enjoy a great meal.

“Enjoyed healthy meals and friendly chat with Sonja”
Reviewed 16 December 2013

Visited Aitutaki in November for the second time in the last four years. Each time we enjoyed visiting Tauono's Garden Cafe. Tried delicious Sonja's kuru (bread tree) lasagna. You might find that the place has a very basic facilities, but this is fully compensated with Sonja's hospitality and superb meals she is preparing for visitors. We also bought and enjoyed some pre-packed meals and cakes. If your priorities are tasting original dishes prepared from fresh ingredients and relaxed chat with friendly host, then visiting Tauono's Garden Cafe is must.

“Bread fruit Lasagne at Tauono's”
Reviewed 9 November 2013

I love lasagne, but I have a wheat and dairy intolerance. Whilst staying on Aitutaki, I visited Tauono's garden cafe and had one of the best meals I have ever tasted. Sonja, who grows her own organic fruit and vegetables, makes a variety of delightful, incredibly healthy and absolutely delicious meals for lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The deserts are also stunning, and her afternoon teas are to die for! She also sells her own home-grown produce on these days, so I was lucky enough to be provided with an array of amazing fruits and vegetables during my stay. This was great as I was mainly doing my own cooking.

The bread fruit lasagne was delicately flavoured and absolutely delicious, and surrounded with a gorgeous variety of salad, accompaniments, and home-made chutney to make the meal just perfect. The setting is stunning too, and you can sit there under the thatch and tree canopy, and just enjoy the beautiful ambience and scenery. You can chat to Sonja herself, who is a wealth of knowledge about diet, organic growing, fruit, vegetables and the different herbs, other plants and spices that are beneficial and healing, including beautifully grown tumeric, which I made into a very cleansing and rejuvenating tea on a daily basis.

This is a place to visit and to try Sonja's delicacies. Don't leave Aitutaki without going here at least once!

“Surviving on the Lonely Planet listing”
Reviewed 8 November 2013

This place has had a long ride based on that Lonely Planet listing. The prices have crept ever upwards, I don't care how 'remote' Aitutaki is, the owner of this place knows exactly what he is up to.

The food is totally average, and heavily marketed on the fact some of the produce is grown locally on site. The service... sure you get a chat with the man himself but that is all part of the charade whilst you wait an unreasonably long time for a small portion of food with endless supplements (coffee, cake etc)

Maybe once it was unique and great, but ever since that LP listing it's over!

Koru Café is not far and far better

“TAUONO'S”
Reviewed 12 October 2013

We were inspired to visit Tauono's after reading her inspirational book dedicated to her late husband.Dedicated to self sufficiency and recipes from local produce from their own extensive gardens we felt very priviledged to be welcomed into Tauono's Garden Restaurant an open-aired retreat in the front garden of her home. After reading her book we had great expectations of the food on offer and we were not disappointed!Tauono's offered a relaxed dining experience with an excellant introduction to local organic island foods. We would not hestitate to recommend Tauono's and will definitely return one day!
