En route between Anchorage and Homer, we spent a night in one of the cabins, and enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at the restaurant. Of the two, the restaurant is the real winner - friendly service, plenty of kitchen banter to keep things lively, huge portions, of fresh fish and sides, and a fine selection of off-beat Alaska souvenirs in a corner display. The cabin was fine - full kitchen, room for 4 including the beds in the sleeping loft, clean, plenty of towels. But there were some odd omissions, like no towel racks or even hooks in the bathroom, no soap for the shower, and no eco-friendly cleaning products as promised in a sign over the sink. The real annoyance, though, was the furnace in the bedroom. Its cover had been removed and was leaning against the closet, and the noise it produced was such that we finally just turned it off.

I've stayed at Gwin's several times on my 18 trips to Alaska. After a general downslide for a few years, it's pulled itself up and has really turned itself around. I've spent a lot more money at other more "upscale" establishments on the Kenai, but never got as good a value for my dollar as I have gotten at Gwin's. The accomodations are clean and some replacements and upgrades have been made to some of the older facilities. The bar and restaurant are both worth a stop after a hard day of fishing on the Russian River or driving down the Sterling Hgwy on the way to Homer. It's truly a throwback to the days of the original roadhouses; everything you need is available at Gwin's. Lose that last coho fly on a snag? Restock at Gwin's. Mantle for your lantern? Yep, got 'em. Line? Rod? Advice? Lodging? A cold drink? A hot meal? (Best biscuts and gravy on the peninsula!) One stop shopping in the Heart of the Kenai and it's all provided with a smile. They want you to enjoy your stay on the Kenai wherever you might roam and they will work hard to make Gwin's Lodge a pleasant memory of your time spent on "The Last Frontier".

Room Tip: Even if you don't stay at Gwin's, stop, have a drink, and eat at Gwin's!

Warm cozy cabin was much appreciated after an autumn hike on the Resurrection Trail. Nice furnishings. Quiet and clean. Most of Cooper Landing lodging is closed down this time of year so we appreciated finding such a nice option for a family reunion.

While we didn't stay at the lodge we did stop in to eat lunch. And what a wonderful meal it was and we really enjoyed sitting at the counter and watching and talking with the cooks. We both had hamburgers and Wow! The cook was so funny, and everyone in the kitchen cooked and danced around to rock n roll. Too funny. I believe the cook said he was from South Africa.

This was a girls wknd with 4 of us staying in a cabin for 4. Can't recall number.
We found the cabin clean with a bunk bed, dbl bed and a pullout couch. The heater worked like a champ too. The kitchenette had basic supplies and a coffee maker. It was big enough for all of us without feeling too cramped. The shower head was wonky and needs a good cleaning, it spayed in every direction but down. Not enough cups for each of us but otherwise a cozy stay.
Gwin's dining is a must, we always stop for burgers when passing thru for fishing or camping. The Halibut and burgers were big and delicious as always with friendly service.

We spent one night in the Fir cabin at Gwin's Lodge, reminding us of a good old time cabin. It was "cozy" (smallish) but comfortable. The cabin was clean and had lovely appointments, had a good reading lamp and a great hot shower. We were a late arrival, they left the light on and the room open with our settling up in the morning. While I floated and fished on the Kenai river my wife had a great breakfast that included reindeer sausage. No doubt we will return and spend a couple of nights, my fishing the Russian and my wife relaxing and reading.

We stayed two nights in a Poplar Chalet during late August. A clean and quiet modular unit with cabin like exterior. No tv but that was ok. Would like shades/curtains on kitchen window. Small bedroom, however, it good for the two of us.( Please note :Did not use loft,.looked low for an adult) Bed was comfortable (new mattress.) Shampoo/conditioner in shower were a nice amenities. It was great having a full kitchen to broil the wild Alaskan salmon for a late dinner (after driving from Denali) and warm muffins/fresh coffee before our early morning drive to Seward for Kenai Fjord cruise. Our breakfast the next morning in the restaurant was awesome! taste and portion sizes!!! (man-size!)The staff was very warm, welcoming and informative. We definitely plan to return on our next trip to the peninsula!! Next time we intend to include a fishing experience in the Kenai/Russian Rivers. location, location, location!!!!
