The Rickshaw

The Rickshaw is a worthy replacement for Stefano’s – in fact we think it is better.

We ate there twice during this visit and would have eaten there again before we left, but being a Sunday it was closed.

The menu is an interesting mixture of Asian food. We ate off both the main menu and the blackboard menu which, between them give a great variety. It is licensed and the wine list is very reasonably priced.

The first time we shared a squid entree and then shared two main courses – one a chicken dish with rice and the other pork with noodles. Most enjoyable.

Our second meal was even better. We shared an entree of Vietnamese rice rolls and again shared 2 main courses – Vietnamese chow mein with chicken and Saigon Fish curry.

We don’t often do desserts – particularly in Asian restaurants. But I noticed ginger ice cream and was intrigued to try it. My husband decided on chocolate mud cake. That was OK but the ginger ice cream was absolutely delicious – I just loved it. When I asked about it when we paid the bill I was told they make it themselves – whether from scratch or whether they add ginger to vanilla ice cream I’m not sure, but I highly recommend it.

This is a nice little restaurant, unpretentious but serving excellent food. We recommend you book as it’s only small. We’ll certainly be back next year.

My husband and I were recommended this place by some guests at our resort. We were not disappointed. We tried the Wonton Entree which came with a gorgeous dipping sauce, Vietnamese Squid with sweet chili sauce and for main the Vietnamese Chicken. Each dish was super tasty, so tasty in fact we went back again the next evening.

Like most things in the islands, you should take this restaurant with a pinch if salt. Its a blend of different cuisines to suit a range of tastes - the special on the day we went was butter chicken curry. Cant comment on that but the chicken pho, spring rolls and red beef curry we had were excellent. Would make a point of going again.

The Rickshaw has been a great addition to the restaurant scene in Muri since opening in August last year ( in the premises previously operated as "Stephanos" Italian establishment ).
Sue Carruthers ,long time Rarotongan restaurateur, has transformed this space into a relaxed,,non-pretentious ,"casual dining" Vietnamese experience.
The staff are willing and friendly, and Sue is,as always, the quintessential host.
The food (and beverage) optons are varied ,tasty and well priced. We particularly recommend the spicy beef samosas and the Vietnamese chicken curry, but there are lots of other enticing dishes to suit all tastes.
We have dined at the Rickshaw often, during our regular visits to Rarotonga, since it"s opening last year -it just seems to get better.
We would encourage potential diners to book,as this is a very popular place( and don't forget take-aways are also available) .
- Enjoy !

With abundant restaurants providing the local and delicious fish dishes it was nice to try something with a different flavour. Obviously popular, the first night we visited The Rickshaw (mid week even!) it was full with no free tables at all. We came back the next day and in no way were we disappointed. Other reviews here mention it isn't "authentic" enough but we certainly didn't find that and we often eat Asian. We tried three dishes including Red Curry Beef and Pad Thai and all were delicious. With the open-air windows and a delightful breeze blowing through with scooters buzzing by in the distance this felt very much like an authentic experience for us.
Our disappointment was not getting a chance to come back for a second night! If you want a change from the usual beachside fare this is well-worth investigating. Ask for a table by the window.
