“Great place to stay in Haines”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2013

Byron and Laura were great welcoming hosts, and make an awesome breakfast. The view of the harbor from the front room and deck are fabulous. It is an easy walk to town. Hosts provide transportation to the ferry.

The only negative was getting sandwiches at the fish trailer nearby; only 1 of our 8 pieces of "salmon" were pink, the rest were white and tasted like cod.

Room Tip: The view from the front room is amazing. The sun will wake you up very early.

This is the perfect place to stay in Haines! Byron and Laura are friendly and very helpful hosts and we had a wonderful time talking with them and enjoying the delicious homemade breakfasts served every morning. Laura makes amazing muffins and Byron serves yummy sausage. They were extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Rooms were beautiful, welcoming and very clean. Highly recommended!

I have stayed in B&Bs all over Alaska and A Sheltered Harbor is a good one! They came and picked me up at the airport, gave me a nice clean room with a flat screen TV and private bathroom (I stayed in one of the smaller rooms). You get your own key with anytime access to your room which is important if you intend to take advantage of the prolonged Alaska sunlight. I went fishing and they gave me fishing advice, a map of town, and even froze my catch for me. I am lactose intolerant and they bought special pancakes and milk for me and another guest had celiac disease and they accommodated them as well. The sausage and ham were excellent, the coffee and juice were great, but the conversation is why I stay in a B&B rather than a hotel every time. Byron and Laura are a wonderful couple and very pleasant to stay with and very helpful. The view is the best in Haines and there are rental cars and the fast ferry right next door.

Room Tip: The suite is gigantic, but unnecessary for one couple.

Adequate but not special. Stayed 2 nights. Good location. Plain comfortable rooms but somewhat loud and no blackout curtains which would be nice in the summer. Pretty clean except for a cobweb or two in our room. Breakfast was the same each morning and was disappointing and plain. Pancakes from a mix, syrup from a bottle, cereal and toast, powdered juice mix, canned fruit, etc. home mixed sausage was good but eggs or variety or homemade food would be better.

This is an authentic seaside B&B in a perfect location with wonderful husband and wife hosts who ensured our stay was memorable. Their local knowledge of the area was priceless and the hospitality was like staying in a friend's home. Waking up to the smell of fresh muffins and hot coffee looking out at the emerald water and the backdrop of white capped mountains was amazing. The full breakfast was always delicious and a great way to start the day along with valuable advice from the hosts. Haines has plenty to do locally but can also serve as a great "home base" for flightseeing in Glacier Bay, a ferry boat ride to Juneau or Skagway, and/or great car tour destinations in the interior.

Room Tip: The king bed suite had a trundle daybed and table and chairs facing the water -- was spacious and ve...

We are a family of 6 that stayed at the Sheltered Harbor in early August 2012. Our impression of this B&B was good. Laura was our contact and she was very nice. It is not fancy from the outside, but the rooms are clean. There are some basic rooms (which we used) and some larger nicer rooms. Laura and her husband were very friendly. Our breakfast in their large kitchen was good and was a combined effort by both of them. We had a nice time chatting. Our 4 children were quite comfortable there. Who knew, but we had a nice Mexican meal at Mosey's cantina just up the road.

I did not stay at the B & B, but I did rent bikes from them. Very friendly people. My bike broke in town and he brought me another one within five minutes. It was a great way to see the town. It is right on the left once you exit the ship dock.
