“Great Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 September 2013

We had a wonderful time at this beautiful lodge! Watching the brown bears on the river was an experience that was exhilarating and beautiful. The room eas immaculate, specious , and comfortable. The owner went more than the second mile to accommodate our party. Definitely on my list to return to again and soon.. M Gregory

nice place to stay, just a few miles from the center of Haines and the ferry. From the shady porch (shared by all the 3 rooms, but each has it´s own sets of seats and table) a lovely view to the river and mountains. Very quiet and lovely. Large, clean rooms with great bed, coffeemaker, microwave, fridge and wifi. We are planning to return august next year!

Haines was our 3rd stop while doing the Circle Route, and this property was by far our favourite.
The lodge sits on a bluff directly overlooking the Chilkoot River. The rooms are very nicely appointed with beautiful quilts on the beds and furniture that is in very good shape. Polished colored concrete floors add to feeling of cleanliness in the rooms. We put the kitchenette to very good use, and enjoyed BBQ'ing steaks on the veranda on one of the nights during our stay.
The best part though was the wildlife viewing that we enjoyed from within inches of our patio door. Eagles and bears made regular appearances during our stay (exercise caution when opening the main door to the room, bears were also seen walking through the parking lot behind the lodge!). Salmon fishermen dotted the river, and the fish were easily seen just up the road at the lake.
We would return here in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: No worries here - it is a small lodge and all of the rooms have the same view.

we were lucky to have two nights in this unbelievable b&b just above the grisly bear salmon hunting spot, in the chilkot natural reserve near haines alaska. not surprisingly it should be booked a year in advance!

We thoroughly enjoyed the nice clean rooms and beautiful unsurpassed location of this lodge. Relax and enjoy the sights of eagles, bears and salmon passing along their paths on the lovely Chilkoot River. Feel yourself decompress and be part of the beauty surrounding you.

We stayed here for 5 nights in early July 2013. Though we were a little too early to see bears we absolutely loved this place. We will try to go back again later in the summer sometime to see bears. The actual accommodations are great. . . Microwave, fridge, coffee maker. Bed linens were very nice, bed was comfortable. Sitting on the patio just outside the sliding glass door was a highlight of the stay as we watched the bald eagles get food for their eaglets in a nest across the river. As described by other reviewers the lodge sits up on a cliff over looking the Chilkoot River. We walked the mile down to Chilkoot Lake a few times which was a really pretty walk on a quiet road along the river. The lodge is 11 miles outside of town and well worth the drive. Sue, the owner, offered to watch our dog for us one of the days we were there. Though we did not take her up on the offer we really appreciated it. She is an artist and we were lucky enough to get a one of a kind Tlingit Inspiration Flag that she made. If you get a chance to stay at the Chilkoot River Lodge I would suggest you not miss out on the opportunity!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2 but my guess is tey are all te same.

We got to Haines in late June and early July and stayed at the Chilkoot River Lodge for 4 nights. The weather was cloudy/grey/wet for 3.5 days of our 4 day stay and we did not see one bear (and let me tell you I drove all over the place) BUT we still loved the CRL! The Lodge sits on a bluff above the Chilkoot River and the views are breathtaking along with the sounds of the rushing river. We saw lots of bald eagles including a few snatching some fish from the stream. The Chilkoot Lake is a little further down the road and is another stunning piece of scenery to soak in. The rooms are basic = 2 queen beds and a little area with a kitchenette and table but they have decorated it just right so you end up liking the rooms too (for the times you decide to draw your eyes away from the lake).

I put Haines and Seward up at the top of my list for prettiest cities in all of Alaska, with Juneau and Sitka 3rd and 4th. We did get decent wifi in the rooms but were in the third room away from the main building and for people that might need the wifi even more you might want to book the room right next to the main building. We also went to the library with the kids on 2 occasions (again the weather was not good) and the library was very nice (it won some award back a few years ago). We did the drive up the Haines Highway....into Canada....all the way to the highest point before turning around. Even though the weather was cloudy it was an extremely scenic journey and I could only imagine how pretty it would be if the sun was out in full force.
