“Perfection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2014

I stayed at CRL the second week of August. I can't add much to what other reviewers have already said - this lodge is beyond wonderful if you love nature and wildlife. Every morning I would wake to the sound of bald eagles - and stroll onto the porch to watch the bears parade up and down the riverbank throughout the day. The pine-scented air and the sound of the river were wonderfully relaxing. The room felt cozy and homey and the beds were very comfortable with nice linens. I really, truly did not want to leave after our three night stay. Bring binoculars. And you likely will want to rent a car as the Lodge is about a 15-20 minute drive from town and any restaurants/shops, etc.. I WILL return to the Lodge and to Haines; small pieces of paradise in the Alaskan wilderness.

Room Tip: All the rooms are equally good

The pictures do not do it justice. The view from the room is amazing. The rooms are clean and quaint, the beds are super comfy and the location is perfect. We were a little early for the salmon run but we did see a grizzly walking the river looking for the early salmon. The price for this place is very reasonable, Sue was very prompt with reservations. Book early as there are only three rooms available. We were in Alaska for two weeks and this was by far my favorite place to stay, including the previous two years we have travelled Alaska.

Room Tip: Only three rooms, all with an excellent view!

Chilkoot Lodge may well be paradise - it is set up on the bank of the river and has the most spectacular yet serene view. If I were to look at one landscape for the rest of time I think this would be the one. The rooms themselves are big, comfortable and well kitted out with tea/coffee making, fresh muffins daily, a fridge and BBQ facilities by the deck. All of the practicalities are very well taken care of, which means you can focus on what is really amazing, and that is the environment around it. There was an eagle's nest just across the river, an otter that fished daily just in front of the lodge, bears that wander the banks, and salmon that leap from the water. I really hope we will be back again, but in the meantime I'll never forget that view.

Everything about this lodge is superb. It is clean, comfortable, well equipped, quiet and located on a lovely stretch of the Chilkoot River. Sue, the proprietor, is a lovely lady and a mine of information about the area and its indigenous people. We very much enjoyed our stay here despite not seeing any bears (the nesting Bald Eagles feeding their young made up for this). A little warning - a vehicle is necessary for staying here as it is a pricey taxi ride from town.

Room Tip: All 3 rooms are excellent

We were here for three nights in June with two other couples and it was the best place we stayed during our 10 day vacation in this beautiful state. It was such a treat to come back "home" after a day of hiking and grill out in this fantastic, magical setting. Sue is wonderful and we love Haines.
My only recommendation is that it might be even better in July when there is a great chance to see bears catching their salmon dinner in the river immediately outside. Fred at the ferry terminal recommended Chilkoot River Lodge; he knew just how special this place is!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are equal, but a car is a must as this is about 10 miles out of town.

My husband and I stayed at the Chilkoot River Lodge and had a terrific experience. The owner, Sue and her sister were most helpful from making the reservations all the way through our stay. The location was perfect with a great view of the river and was very peaceful and quiet. The room was very comfortable and the bed was soft, just like we like it. We saw two eagle nests and lots of eagles in the area. Unfortunately it was too early to see bears. This is a great place to stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 1 which is closer to the main house to make sure we had a good Internet signal. L...

We agree with everything the other reviewers have written and will discuss our experience from a different perspective. Fifty years ago, we were young newly weds living in Haines, where I was working as a geologist. Each evening we drove out to the Chilkoot River to go fishing. In those days, the drive was on a narrow dirt road. Today the drive is on a modern highway with a yellow line down the center. Progress of a sort, I suppose. While we used to fish alone, today the Chilkoot River has many visitors to see the bears, eagles, scenery, and to fish. The fishing is still great and the bears are as plentiful as they were long ago. The valley remains beautiful and serene, but today you can sit on the patio outside your Chilkoot River Lodge room and enjoy the wildlife and scenery in comfort, which we now elderly folks appreciated. The room is immaculate and everything is first class. My work has taken me to many beautiful and remote places across this world, but the Chilkoot River has always remained one of my all time favorite localities. If you don't like the Chilkoot River Lodge then you won't like Heaven either.

Room Tip: All the rooms are the same with the same view. There are no bad rooms.
