With a rental car, the Chilkoot River is reached by a 13-mile drive on Lutak Road (fully paved) -- approx. 8 miles past the Ferry Terminal. The river's setting quickly transitions from its wide mouth to a rushing stream bordered by progressively-higher rock walls. At the head of the river is scenic Chilkoot Lake. There are plenty of worthwhile photo-taking opportunities along the river and at its junction with the lake. Descriptive display signs are located there.
Salmon were running during our mid-August visit. Accordingly, many fishermen were fishing from the river's banks as well as wading into the stream. We saw many successful catches. A four-legged fisherman - a large black bear - happened to be situated close to the near bank. We witnessed the bear snag a salmon and then proceed to eat it. While such might have been distressing to some, for us it was an episode of the "circle of life". Seeing this action was one of our vacation's highlights.
