Alaska is expensive. We could only hope that the Pioneer Inn was OK. When we arrived, Amy, the owner, took one look at this elderly couple who could hardly walk after the long drive to Homer form Anchorage and apologized that we had been given a second story room. (No elevator.) She asked if we would prefer a smaller room downstairs, and that she would take our luggage upstairs if we wanted that room. The upstairs room had a kitchenette, which we did not need, and the downstairs had a view of the bay, which was lovely. We chose the smaller room. She said it had been promised to a couple who come every year and use that room, but that they would understand. And as we were only staying two nights, it would be O.K. It was clean and comfortable, within walking distance of a AAA recommended restaurant, and the owners were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Front rooms have great view.

Rich and Amy are the best people we met on our trip. Rooms are clean and big. Quality was excellent and prices were great. We will return next year. Thanks again for your hospitality.

Our Pioneer Inn experience was like traveling back in time to a real home-away-from-home. I was not able to make reservations online, but when I called to inquire, Amy treated me like a customer she'd known forever. In less than 5 minutes, I had a reservation for a suite at an incredibly reasonable rate. Amy is one of the owners--how often do you get to speak with the owner of any hotel anymore? I suppose more often in Alaska than most places, but it did make me feel like my patronage mattered. When we arrived, Amy greeted us and we chatted and shared stories. We immediately felt very comfortable. The suite was perfect for us. It was very simply furnished--not fussy--with tons of space. It had a kitchen, which is very helpful for vegan travelers who need to bring food with us, and a large comfortable bed. Even though the suite was on the first floor, it was amazingly quiet, and everything (except maybe the Spit) is within walking distance. We live in Anchorage and love taking mini-breaks to Homer. We hope to stay at the Pioneer Inn whenever we go.

The family who owns and operates the Pioneer Inn are some of the sweetest most honest people we have ever met in our many travels. When we arrived, the father had his two boys unload our filled to the brim Chevrolet Suburban, which they did cheerfully! The unit we stayed in had a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room and was immaculate and more than large enough to accommodate the three of us. In Alaska, there are always homey touches added to the kitchen and often travelers leave behind something for the next guest - a lovely custom, which was practiced here. Framed by the living room windows are four majestic volcanoes sitting behind Kachemak Bay. On a clear day, the view will take your breath away. The Pioneer Inn is located in the center of town and nearby is the Three Sisters Bakery that serves fabulous pastries. Also nearby is Homer Spit, about five minutes away and offers access to other towns, such as Seldovia. If you want safety, value, and are down-to-earth travelers, you can't make a better choice in Homer than the Pioneer Inn.
