“Gorgeous location, fabulous breakfasts, friendly advice, great hosts”
Reviewed 2 July 2009

Betsy and Davis Webb have run the Magic Canyon Ranch B&B a few minutes outside Homer, Alaska, for 17 years. They say this will be their last year, so we'll see.

We stayed for three nights; they cut us a deal on two rooms -- one for my wife and me, one for our two kids (16 and 18) -- and both were ideal. Our room had a double bed; the kids' room had three singles. These two rooms shared a bath. There was a third guest room with what looked to be a queen bed; that room had its own private bath.

Davis runs the B&B. He's a great fellow, with wonderful stories and good advice on where to eat or activities to undertake. And, he'll make phone calls for you to set up reservations or things for you. He'll either leave you a note on the front door to let you know his success, or he'll tell you if he's there. We enjoyed many conversations with him, whether over breakfast, or after a day's outing, or on the front porch with him and Betsy.

All the guest rooms are on the second floor of their beautiful home overlooking Kachemak Bay. The view is actually up the Bay -- you can't see the Homer Spit -- but they've got a wonderful view of Grewingk Glacier and the mountains. Two of the guest rooms -- the one with the private bath and the one with the three single beds -- have this view; the third room has a view of the lush mountainside vegetation behind their home.

The home is easy to find; the directions on the website are accurate. Once you turn off East End Road (the main road heading east out of Homer), there are signs at every junction so you don't get lost. The only bad thing is, the road from the main road is a gravel road, and it can get bumpy, depending on the rain and the erosion. But it's really nothing to worry about -- any vehicle can make the drive!

Davis is the one who makes breakfast in the morning, and he'll gladly coordinate with you. He'll serve a hot breakfast as early as 7:00; if you're headed out fishing, for example, there will be other things you can make for yourself, and he'll set the coffee pot so that it's ready for you. But his meals are not to be missed, and they've all got a nice Alaska twist to them. I won't spoil his surprises, but you'll like them!

Our stay at the Magic Canyon Ranch was terrific. It was the first time our kids had stayed in a B&B, and I think they're hooked. Thanks, Betsy and Davis!
