Description: AJ's Oldtown Steakhouse & Tavern is known locally as the "Historic Waterfront". AJ's is proud to be serving up the top 2% of USDA Prime Beef offered in the Nation and the only on the Kenai Peninsula. Offering mouth-watering steaks & great seafood including Scallops, King Crab, Fresh Halibut & Salmon! Let's not forget those delicious cheese burgers, the Tavern Menu, Spirits and Specialty Martinis in a casual old town atmosphere! This venue also features great family entertainment & dinner music before 10pm. If your looking for food late...AJ's is the last Kitchen open in Homer. Come in and see what's new. The transformation is amazing! We've kept the old town hospitality tradtion going and are still serving Homer's famous Red Knot Craft Beer, the Old Town Rusty Nail & some amazing specialty martinis! Some history...Established in 1941 AJ's has an amazing history. The front part of the building was built as the original women's club in 1937. Laura & Walt purchased it from the women's club and it opened as the first cafe & bar in Homer in 1941. They named it the Homer Cafe & Club. It featured just a few bar stools, a pool table, and a tiny kitchen. Over the years it has had many owners including Tex & Marge Sharp. They named it the "Waterfront" and it became known as the best place on the peninsula to get a good steak! In the 1970's folks would spend hours at the Waterfront being entertained by the likes of Harley Hess & Hobo Jim. In the 1990's it became Duggan's and featured a friendly, Irish Pub atmosphere. Now, as AJ's, the old town building has come full circle back to the ol' Waterfront days, featuring great Steak, Seafood, Spirits & Entertainment, along with the same friendly old town hospitality that has been a tradition for over 70 years.

“Improving constantly!”

When I first started visiting AJ's a few years ago, it was hit & miss on the service and food. I primarily go there for steaks and found that often, how good it was, obviously was entirely dependent on the staff at the time; kitchen, bar, wait help.
About every other time the service & steaks were awesome so that was enough to go back and not write the place off.
However, the past 3 times I've been there have consistently been fantastic. Great steaks (it is a steak house), great service, and even eating at the bar has been fun.
It's now on my "go to" list!
Maybe someday the owners will remodel and spruce up the bar & dining rooms to match the pretty cool bathrooms!

“Not to be missed!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2013

My supervisor and I have been working in Homer for the last month. Consequently, we have sampled dinners at many Homer restaurants. One day, I explored the old part of Homer and saw AJ's Oldtown Steakhouse and Tavern. That evening, Richard and I decided to try this place. We had many other Homer restaurants with which to compare AJ's.

After we were seated, we began to look around at the old time atmosphere, the table cards advertising local talent a couple nights a week and the general ambiance.

I don't remember what Richard had, but I had a steak and shrimp meal. At the first bite, each of us was amazed at the fantastic flavor and preparation of the meal, not to mention the excellent presentation.

Both of us agreed that this was the best meal we had ever had in a restaurant, not just in Homer, Alaska, but anywhere! We look forward to dining there at the earliest opportunity. Do not miss this dining experience!

“AJs for Dinner and a Show”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2013

We took our host and hostess out to dinner and a show at AJs - Hobo Jim. What a hoot he was. It is a nice sized bar and restaurant - definitely set up for entertainment. We enjoyed the show and drinks before dinner and yummy dinner and drinks after as well. We weren't rushed to get out even though the place was packed. The prices were reasonable. Not a tablecloth kind of fancy - Alaska attire perfect! Come as you are and enjoy!

“Average Food - Good Service”

We had an early dinner at AJs while staying in Homer. I had the salmon patties which were okay. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. Since we were not overly impressed with the food would probably not eat here again.

“Could have been better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 October 2013

My husband said his scallops were the best he'd ever tasted, and my halibut was really good, but the rest of the meal was just OK. For the prices paid for the entrees, we were both disappointed with the portion sizes. And it would have been nice to have something accompanying the meal - bread, salad or soup..... something.
