Owner description: Mendenhall Glacier is easily accessible via roads from the local airport, cruise ship terminal and state ferry terminal. Our facility and lands are managed by the federal government through the United States Forest Service. Federal passes are accepted and sold s well as daily passes. There is a visitor center with a theater showing a 15-minute film on Mendenhall Glacier, a bookstore operated by nonprofit organization Discovery Southeast, and exhibits on wildlife, history, and glacial and geological changes. Rangers provide talks at various indoor and outdoor sites in summer. Open hours in summer are daily 8am to 7:30pm. Due to wildlife and bears, no food is allowed outdoors from April-November. There is no beverage or food service available to prevent bears from becoming food-conditioned. Nearby Steep Creek is the spawning stream for wild sockeye salmon from late July through early September. Later in the fall, a run of coho salmon spawn in the creek. Porcupines can be seen foraging on leaves in deciduous trees. Beavers are visible early in the morning and in the evening. Learn about Alaska and the natural world around the glacier and lake. Enjoy a one-hour hike to 400-foot-tall Nugget Falls. Other trails lead to different habitats. In winter, the visitor center is open Friday-Sunday from 10am to 4pm and closed on federal holidays.

I went to the glacier as part of a package tour - you can easily do this via shuttle bus (10$) from the pier. The best part of this tour was the walk to Nugget Falls - don't miss this - you get a very up close look at the glacier and a great look of the Fall - well worth the 45 minute walk. Watch the movie in the visitor centre.

“Helicopter Tour”
Reviewed 12 July 2014 via mobile

We saw this glacier via helicopter tour to the Juneau ice field. Our guides from North Star Trekking did a great job--the pilot flew around the glacier so we could view it from various angles, and our trek guide was very informative. What a great experience to be able to walk across this phenomenal glacier.

“Ship excursion to Mendenhall glacier”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

We took a bus excursion from the Disney Wonder ship to see the Mendenhall glacier. We'd previously seen the Sawyer glacier from the ship at Tracy Arm but this was different again because you can approach the site on foot. A short 20 minute walk through lovely scenery from the education centre finds you at the lakes edge where you see the glacier, a wonder huge waterfall and icebergs all in the one view before you. Magic!

“Do not book this trip through your cruise ship.”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

While the cruise ships want to charge two to three hundred dollars to go on this excursion, you can definitely do it much cheaper. Get off the ship and catch one of the many blue busses for $8.00 a day, per person and walk around Mendenhall Glacier on your own time, where and when you want to. The Mendenhall visitor center is nice, but again; is also a tourist trap.
The Glacier itself and the surrounding are quite beautiful and even in May, the temperature was not too bad.

“Majestic”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

We enjoyed impressive views of Mendenhall Glacier with icebergs floating in the lake, and a lovely waterfall. We watched a very interesting short film about the glacier at the visitor’s center, a few informative exhibits around, and you can touch a piece of a 200 year old iceberg, very cool.
