Owner description: Mendenhall Glacier is easily accessible via roads from the local airport, cruise ship terminal and state ferry terminal. Our facility and lands are managed by the federal government through the United States Forest Service. Federal passes are accepted and sold s well as daily passes. There is a visitor center with a theater showing a 15-minute film on Mendenhall Glacier, a bookstore operated by nonprofit organization Discovery Southeast, and exhibits on wildlife, history, and glacial and geological changes. Rangers provide talks at various indoor and outdoor sites in summer. Open hours in summer are daily 8am to 7:30pm. Due to wildlife and bears, no food is allowed outdoors from April-November. There is no beverage or food service available to prevent bears from becoming food-conditioned. Nearby Steep Creek is the spawning stream for wild sockeye salmon from late July through early September. Later in the fall, a run of coho salmon spawn in the creek. Porcupines can be seen foraging on leaves in deciduous trees. Beavers are visible early in the morning and in the evening. Learn about Alaska and the natural world around the glacier and lake. Enjoy a one-hour hike to 400-foot-tall Nugget Falls. Other trails lead to different habitats. In winter, the visitor center is open Friday-Sunday from 10am to 4pm and closed on federal holidays.

“Go see this before it recedes even further”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

If you visit the Mendenhall Glacier, be sure and do everything in the Visitor Center. The guides are very knowledgeable and fill in the history of the incredible view you're seeing. There is a short film while explains exactly how glaciers are formed, why there are different colors to it, etc. It's just an incredible sight with the glacier, the icebergs, the lake, the waterfall, everything.

“"Nature at its best!"”
Reviewed 22 July 2014 via mobile

Wow! (This was the second part of our excursion with Dolphin Jet Boat Tours.). After our whale adventure, we got on the bus and were driven to the glacier park.

As you arrive, you are instantly amazed at the beauty of the area. The glacier is colorful with hues of blue. The water in front of it gives way to a picturesque moment. There is a short walk way where you can get a great picture or just to take a moment and enjoy the beauty.

If you have time, take a short hike to the waterfall. It's about a 45 min hike--round trip. We didn't have time to do it because we only had an hour's time before the bus returned.

Stop in at the visitor's center. Check out the short movie about the glacier and Alaska's native cultures.

A definite must-see!

“Beautiful”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

This is an amazing sight! Lots of photo opportunities.

Be certain to walk down to the falls. They are beautiful in a very different way than is the glacier.

Save yourself some big bucks and catch the local bus out to the glacier. You need no tour guide for this trip!

The drive is really short, but beautiful. Plan on about 2 hours total time for this excursion.

“Helicopter to the Glacier”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

This fairly pricey Chopper ride was very cool. It not only gave you a view of the city but a landing on the glacier and some great info as to it's movement and changes.

“Glaciar from Afar”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

Visited Mendenhall Glacier while on cruise of Alaska. This was disappointing, as you cannot get up close to the glacier. You can view it from afar aka the Mendenhall welcome center. Not much else to do there. A few people found a waterfall and "hiked" to it. Should have stayed on this ship!
