Owner description: Mendenhall Glacier is easily accessible via roads from the local airport, cruise ship terminal and state ferry terminal. Our facility and lands are managed by the federal government through the United States Forest Service. Federal passes are accepted and sold s well as daily passes. There is a visitor center with a theater showing a 15-minute film on Mendenhall Glacier, a bookstore operated by nonprofit organization Discovery Southeast, and exhibits on wildlife, history, and glacial and geological changes. Rangers provide talks at various indoor and outdoor sites in summer. Open hours in summer are daily 8am to 7:30pm. Due to wildlife and bears, no food is allowed outdoors from April-November. There is no beverage or food service available to prevent bears from becoming food-conditioned. Nearby Steep Creek is the spawning stream for wild sockeye salmon from late July through early September. Later in the fall, a run of coho salmon spawn in the creek. Porcupines can be seen foraging on leaves in deciduous trees. Beavers are visible early in the morning and in the evening. Learn about Alaska and the natural world around the glacier and lake. Enjoy a one-hour hike to 400-foot-tall Nugget Falls. Other trails lead to different habitats. In winter, the visitor center is open Friday-Sunday from 10am to 4pm and closed on federal holidays.

“Great Tour, Very Educational”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We did a bus tour which included a tour of the local salmon hatchery, then hike to the glacier, then a salmon back. The bus tour was fun, the bus driver provided a lot of fun facts about Juneau, in a very clever way. My favorite part was the hike to a waterfall right by the glacier. The hike was short and very manageable for all skill levels, maybe 1.5 miles or about 30 min.

With or without the tour or salmon bake, I would make sure to go see the Mendenhall Glacier if ever visiting Juneau, Alaska

“Nice view - take a Taxi and beat the crowds”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We got there quick in a Taxi and even found an off the beaten path path by taking off our shoes and socks and crossing a small stream. We were careful to watch for bird nests on the ground. It didnt say not to hike there - just to be watchful. The waterfall was lovely, but sad. We were told that just a couple of years ago the water actually came right out of the Glacier. Now it is quite a ways away.

“Make sure you go to the waterfall”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

When you get to Mendenhall Glacier, you can see it and take a photo in about ten seconds. Then make sure you go to the trail that takes you to the base of the colossal waterfall off to the right of the glacier. You may have to hustle a bit, because it's a little ways off and your tour bus may have limited your time there.
