“Very good hostel”
Reviewed 17 May 2013

I stayed in this hostel for 4 nights and I was very positively surprised by the cleanliness of the hostel. Some members of the staff are really friendly, others less... The building is very conveniently located in the city (10 minutes walk from the bus station and any other excursion departure). It has a super big and well-equipped kitchen. Bathroom is shared but clean and spacious. Rooms are excellent for the price paid, even if the beds are not so comfortable. Excellent deal.

Cleanest, best run hostel I've ever been to. Better than any of the ones I've used in Europe. Large living room, large fully stocked kitchen. More adult patrons. Short walk down the hill to town. Beds are not five star, but for a hostel, they were fine. Would definitely stay there again.

Maybe it is the loneliness of Juneau, Alaska or the hassle of dealing with strangers but the folks who run this place are truly nasty. Nice greeting? Kind words? Something nice? No way! And don't try to get into the place between 9am and 5pm no matter what, no way, don't even try, absolutely not, go away, don't bother us during our beauty sleep!

I know it's inexpensive, but trust me, you get what you pay for here!

I stayed at the Juneau Hostel for one night this summer and was sorely disappointed. For $12 I wouldn't expect great customer service- but the couple at this hostel were unnecessarily condescending. Expect to be scolded even if you arrive before the 11:00 PM curfew and to be awaken military-style, even if it's not quite 9:00 AM. I've stayed at other hostels in Alaska and this was honestly the worst experience I've had.

I have guidebooks which recommend this place, but they must be outdated. I've encountered other travelers in this region who have had experiences similar to mine at this hostel. We left a day before planned and went to the Alaskan Hotel- the prices were higher but the service was much better.

$12/night? Heck yes. Beds aren't great though & you have a 5 minute chore to do before check out. The cab ride can be expensive from the airport but still less than staying in a hotel.

Whenever I have my car in Juneau- I'm staying at the hostel!

Room Tip: McGinnis for the women's floor.

We were excited to arrive at the hostel as we had read great things about it. But when we arrived, the woman at the front desk was miserable with us. She thought we only had 2 in our party when I had definitely told her 5 people and she had confirmed this in an email. She argued with me about this. Then, the first thing she told us were the many rules of the hostel, no alcohol whatsoever, she would lock us out after 11pm and we were to be gone at 9 am and would not be allowed back in until 5. Then, she gave us each a chore to do. We were okay with the chore as this was clearly written on the website and after reading the website again, it did say lockout at 11. It is not clear on the website that you cannot be at the hostel between 9 and 5. I would suggest that they restate the rules when you book and they find someone who is more friendly to work there. You should feel comfortable and safe when you walk into a hostel and happy to be there. We were very disappointed. We talked with other people who had stayed at the hostel and they were actually yelled at at 9:01 because they hadn't left yet and confirmed that the woman was miserable with them as well. If you can handle all of this, on the plus side, it is cheap, clean and in a great location.

The only 2 negatives about this hostel. 1. Is the steep hike uphill you have to make to reach the hostel. 2. access hours of the hostel are limited.
The access hours, though limited, kind of force you to find something to do for the day and explore. So it is kind of a good thing, and bad, depending on your situation. For the prices that hotels in the area charge during the summer, staying here is a no brainer in my opinion. Average hotel costs $100+ a night during the summer tourist season, so $12 a night for a bed, shower, WiFi, and clean useful kitchen. It's a amazing deal. You do have to perform a chore as part of your stay which ranges from cleaning out the fridge to sweeping etc. Rooms were large and had several beds, shower was spacious, common room was inviting, kitchen was clean and had all the furnishings to prepare a meal for yourself. The beds weren't all that comfortable but they were good enough to get some rest. Several lockers and locks are available if you didn't bring one. They require a $5 deposit I believe. If you come to the Juneau area, this is the best place to stay by far. Oh, It's a CA$H only establishment so be sure to have cash with you when you check in.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Juneau Hostel is a non-profit, volunteer-run, public service to provide affordable accommodation for travelers and the families from the outlying communities of Southeast Alaska. Because we are volunteer-run, we have day jobs, which is why we have the 9-5 lock-out, and which is why we are particular about everybody leaving at 9. We have to go to work. The 11 pm curfew ensures quiet, safe, family-oriented accommodation. The gender segregated dorm rooms have no more than 8 beds in the largest room. Yes, the beds are uncomfortable, but you won’t find cleaner or safer accommodations anywhere in the world. In addition, we provide linens, towels, wifi, unlimited hot water, a kitchen and comfortable common area and coin-operated laundry facilities. We are open 350 days a year and the managers live onsite with children. ... more   less
