Owner description: This is our no frills experience offering direct transpiration (14 miles) from downtown Juneau to the Mendenhall Glacier. Buses leave the main cruise ship terminal and glacier every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour beginning at 8:00am most days. The last bus back to downtown leaves the glacier at 6:00pm. Let our bright blue bus take you our to the "Blue Ice Cube."*Beginning and ending times may vary according to cruise ship schedule.

We decided not to use the cruise ship tours since we had heard they really didn't let you have enough time at the Glacier to really enjoy it, so we opted to take the local tour bus. THe Blue Bus cost about $15 per person for a round trip ticket to the Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls. It was as others said, a big school bus painted blue (albeit it had hanging handles and overhead rails to hold on to) with alternate seating. They pack it full of people both sitting and standing for the 15-20 minute ride to the Glacier. It runs every 30 minutes or so, and we found every trip to be full going and coming. But, it's convenient, cheaper than other cruise tours, and you can stay as long as you like at the Glacier but don't be later than 6:00 PM or you'll be calling a cab to come get you! Overall, convenient, inexpensive, no frills, but it gets you there. We used it twice in the two B2B cruise weeks we were there because it was dependable!

We often book "off ship" tours while cruising and thought that this was a nice alternative to paying the high prices of ship tours. Juneau seemed like an easy town to negotiate and we wanted to hike up to the Mendenhall Glacier. The Blue Glacier Express bus was the choice we made to get us to the park. Once you get off the ship in downtown Juneau, there are at least 12 companies offering you tours or simply transportation to the glacier park. We had heard good things about this company from online bloggers. We were really disappointed in the service provided. First we were told that the bus would be along in 10 minutes - 45 minutes later we were still waiting. The person we booked the tour with said that the bus had a flat tire and that the other bus had broken down. This company was running two buses to the very popular destination with 4 major cruise lines in port that day!! We did ask about transferring our tickets to another company and the person from Blue Glacier would not refund our money. We eventually got to the glacier and it was truly a memorable experience. This is the first time we have ever been disappointed by booking an 'off ship' tour.

We have been to Juneau many times and taken a couple of tours. They never stay long enough at Mendenhall Glacier. With the Interpretive Center and trails, you could be there for hours. With the Blue Bus you can stay as long as you want, just queue up for another bus later in the day.
It ran every 30 minutes when we were there. Additionally, the price is right and you still get a guided tour by the bus driver. Do bring your own snack and water, as there is none for sale.

This is a very no-frills way to get to Mendenhall Glacier. The price is decent and it gets you where you want to go. If you're strictly looking for a ride and not a narrated tour then this is the bus company for you. It was on time, clean, and within our budget.

We booked the Glacier Express online and paid for our two return tickets. Talk about convenient. We showed our printed voucher to the driver, got on the bus without any waiting and were whisked up to the glacier. It gave us plenty of time to wander, we were not rushed to get back on board for the return trip but when we were ready it was effortless. There were a lot of people waiting for the return but we all got on, no overcrowding, and we were more than pleased we had chosen this Blue Bus for our visit.
